Initial Expectations: I have heard a lot of really good things about Japanese erotica, so I expected a well made adult feature. I had also heard that a lot of people thought that it was quite sick, so I was a little uneasy about some of what I might find.
Initial Reaction: Yep. That was different. Extremely well made, but not your usual porn.
Review: At some point, I think almost everybody who watches American porn starts to get bored with it in some way or another and look for something different. One of the things I've heard a lot about that seemed like a good place to look for something different was Japanese erotica. Not really knowing much about it, 'Cool Devices' seemed like as good a place to try as any other. I heard some talk that it was kind of sick, but that came from a place that didn't like much adult stuff and I was looking for something different. Well, I found something different! 'Cool Devices' is a collection of unconnected erotic stories about almost anything taboo. The stories range from bondage to incest to rape, all of which are portrayed positively. The first four devices have a total of 6 stories.
'Operation 1: Curious Fruit' is about a quiet girl named Ai. While sitting with her friends having a drink, she seems a couple who are into bondage and is drawn to them for some reason. She follows them when they leave and slowly gets involved in their world. There's a lot of different imagery in this operation, but it's one of the tamest stories on the disc. If you're uncomfortable with what you see here, don't bother going any further. You're almost certainly not going to like what you see.
'Operation 2: Sacred Girl' revolves around a young man who lives a fairly secluded life in a big house with his sister and tutor. He has cameras hidden throughout the house and has wild orgy parties almost every night. He sits in his hidden room and watches what happens throughout the house. The camera he's most interested in, however, happens to be in his little sister's room. The story revolves around the incestuous relationship between the brother and sister and also the tutor. As much as the subject of 'Sacred Girl' made me cringe, objectively it's the best written story here. The story goes between the present relationship and the past as it developed.
'Operation 3' has three short stories. None of the stories have much of a plot. They're all pretty much one scene stories. 'Lover Doll' is a role - playing heavy duty bondage story. One girl is dressed as a rabbit and kept in a cage in the basement. One night, another girl dressed as a cat finds her way into her room. An interesting (for lack of a better word) love scene develops until the master finds that kitty has escaped and punishes them both. 'Winter Swimsuit' is about a guy with a knife that cuts up a girl's clothes while they're on her before having his way with her. Finally, 'Enema' revolves around a couple having sex in a public bathroom while the girl has to pee and the guy makes her wait. All of these stories were very hard to watch for me. I was more than tempted to turn it off or fast forward more than once.
Finally, there's 'Operation 4: Kirei'. 'Kirei' starts with a gangbang scene. At the end of the scene, the guy who's obviously the leader of the group of guys, decides that the girl has done all she can to pleasure them and has her thrown down a trash chute. From there we go to the beach, where friends Kirei and Rui, two young girls, are chasing butterflies. During their chase, they bump into the leader of the gang of guys from the gangbang. He takes them to dinner and drugs them. When Kirei wakes up, she's handcuffed to the bed and a drugged Rui is wiping a potion on her and then rapes her. Kirei tries to escape afterwards, but there's nowhere to run. She has no choice but to become the new slave to the gang, until they feel that she has nothing left to offer. I was pretty disgusted personally with this story and how it showed the rape as an okay thing that the girl kind of wanted. 'Kirei' also had the most 'cartooney' animation. Kirei was portrayed as a young girl, yet she had breasts that took up half her body and were bigger around than her waist.
Objectively, 'Cool Devices' is very good. Subjectively, however, I was disgusted by a lot of it. I have heard quite a few people mention that the Japanese have a very low image of women, and I really felt it throughout the entire disc. There's a couple scenes where the women are into the sex, but mostly the feeling I got from 'Cool Devices' was that it didn't really matter if the women consented or not.
'Cool Devices' has very few extras. Of course there's a photo gallery, but there's also some conceptual art. The conceptual art gives a little feel of the behind the scenes and lets you see how some of the characters progressed.
The audio and video quality of 'Cool Devices' are both very good. There are a few different styles of animation throughout the disc, but they have been transferred well. The audio and video quality are the same or better than what you would see watching anime on cable.
Raincoat Factor: High, if you're into anime.
Overall: If you're looking for something really different, this fits the bill. 'Cool Devices' covers almost everything that you won't find in the typical American adult film, from bondage to incest to rape, and all are portrayed positively. Needless to say, you may want to think twice before you pick this up. Although it is very well done, I am hesitant to recommend it due to some of the content. Objectively, 'Cool Devices' is very good. Subjectively, however, I don't know if I'll watch any other 'Cool Devices', as I was disgusted by a lot of it. There isn't much for extras, but the conceptual art is kind of interesting. The audio and video quality are very good.
