Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past is a collection of all-male adult loops. There are a large number of heterosexual loops on the market that grows larger every few months; however, there is a noticeable lack of gay loops available. Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past is a needed step toward correcting the deficiency of gay loops available on the market.

Loops, while similar to the web scenes available in today's market, are still a different entity. Usually designed to be sold on 8mm film to the home market, loops were shot on 16mm film, often silent, and getting to the sex was oft first and foremost.

Manville has included 15 loops in Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past, which is the current industry standard for loop compilations. Unfortunately, none of the loops contained within the collection are identified by name. However, this reviewer can't blame Manville for this since Manville themselves may not even know the names of the loops. While there are several resources available for attempting to identify heterosexual loops, there are almost no resources for trying to identify all-male loops.

The loops contained in the compilation range from being created in the 1970s on film to being created in the mid-1980s on video. The majority of the loops have little to no set-up or story; however, a few have rather complex stories incorporated into the loops. Some from the 1970s even have live audio, which is not typical for loops from that period.

Manville has done a nice job of creating variety within the loop compilation. Most of the loops are duo pairings; however, there are some threesomes and group loops included. Manville has broken up the different styles of pairings along with the two decades that the loops encompass so that the loops don't become overly repetitive, which can happen on any loop compilation just due to the nature of loops.

Overall, Manville has created a nice all-male loop compilation with Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past. Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past should appeal to all fans of classic loops, especially due to some of the interesting story-telling techniques seen in this compilation that this reviewer has never seen in heterosexual loops.

Manville has done a nice job with their DVD release of Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past under their new Manville Classics label. The loops included in the compilation range from initially being shot on film to initially being shot on video. Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past is presented in the Academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 in 480i. As should be expected from any loop compilation, the video quality varies from loop to loop. The source material for the loops included in the collection appears to vary from film prints to video masters; some of the loops that were originally shot on film seem to have been mastered for this release from a video master. The image contains, at various points, artifacts, print damage, video glitches, and a tracking issue. There are some instances of haloing on some of the loops. The colors look good for some loops, and the color is washed out for others.

The available audio for Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 monaural track. All of the loops appear to contain original sound, which isn't typical for shot on film loops. The audio quality, like the video quality, varies from loop to loop. There is a hiss in the audio during some loops, and there is dirt in the sound in other places. Some of the loops only contain music, which ranges from seventies-style adult film music, to stereotypical 80s porn music, to piano music. In the loops that include dialog, some of the dialog is clear and easy to understand in others dirt in the audio makes the dialog hard to discern.

Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past is a compilation of gay adult loops from the 1970s and 1980s. The loops vary heavily in the type of content included; some have rather elaborate attempts at a story and design while others are just straight out sex scenes with no effort at even a rudimentary set-up. The wide variety of styles of loops included in Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past was a good choice on the part of Manville. If the material contained in a loop compilation is too similar, the compilations can start to drag on; this isn't the case with Classic Loops: Gay XXX From the Past. This compilation is recommended for all fans of adult loops.
