Initial Reaction: It’s anything but a knockout, and just might leave you down for the count with the exception of a couple scenes.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody who wants to know what an average porno looks like or who doesn’t like facials (there’s not a single one here)

Who Should Avoid It: Fans of Dru Berrymore and anybody who wants a fun porno or something that’s pushes at least one limit

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is clear, but there is a bit of obvious dubbing in spots there shouldn’t be, such as close-ups. The video is very clear, but does have a few borderline problems with shadows.

Music: The music is your standard VCA music that you’ve probably heard before. It rests very quietly in the background and is almost unnoticeable unless you pay attention for it when anybody’s making even the slightest moan. It’s a great balance as it never interferes with the rest of the audio but does add a little every now and then.

Menus: The main menu is the typical lousy, unimaginative crap that I’ve unfortunately come to expect from VCA’s menus. I’ve seen bums dress themselves better than VCA’s main menus look, which hopefully isn’t an indicator of the resources VCA gives their DVD creators. The chapter menu is nicely done and lists the scene by the leading lady in the scene. The chapter menu is the only thing about VCA’s menu system that shows any care. Other than that, every thing seems basically recycled from DVD to DVD.

The Feature: Chic Boxing revolves around Chloe, a girl who found her place in life in women’s boxing. She worked her way out of a family with an addict as a mother, and found her calling when she caught her boyfriend cheating on her at the strip club where she worked. She’s on her way to the big leagues now, and thanks to her manager, has an interview with reporter John Decker where she tells him how she got where she is and about the sport.

Evan Stone, playing a scumbag landlord, gives Chloe the choice of fucking him or finding a new place to live when she and her mother can’t make rent. It’s a borderline hot scene, but that’s due almost solely to Charlene’s trash talking.

Unfortunately, Chic Boxing is a bit of a disappointment. The cast and subject here had me expecting a feature that might push the limits a bit for VCA. Although there’s a fair amount of trash talking, there’s only a little anal sex, and barely anything rougher than a very occasional slap on the ass. Chloe seems particularly restrained, although she does do a good job in all three of her scenes. The real highlight of the feature, however, is Dru Berrymore, who turns in both a great girl - girl scene and a great boy - girl scene, and makes the movie at least worth rental price just for her two scenes. Luckily I was able to stay awake for both of them, which kind of surprised me after the slow start. Most of the problem with Chic Boxing resides in the editing and camera work, which both seem extremely lethargic. The camera slowly moves back and forth, but you rarely see all of both performers on screen at the same time, which I think helps the chemistry a bit since you see completely how both people are responding to each other. Chic Boxing is a pretty average feature that unfortunately could have been a little better if a few people weren’t a little punch drunk.

Extras: Bios are included for Chloe, Taylor St. Clair, Dru Berrymore, and Charlene Aspen. Each one includes a bit of personal information, a few stills, and a link to the star’s scene. A trailer is also included for Being Juli Ashton, as well as a photo gallery that lasts just over two and a quarter minutes with seven seconds per very nice looking full screen photo. Surprisingly, VCA has also included a couple other extras. There’s about two minutes of outtakes which focuses mostly on the cast flubbing their lines. There’s also a bonus strip dance with Taylor St. Clair that lasts about three and a half minutes. She works her way very well around the pole, and this is a great incentive to see Taylor if she happens to be appearing at a strip club near you. Unfortunately, as a full scene it falls quite a bit short and feels more like cut footage than anything.

Overall: Currently, Chic Boxing can be found online for between $18 and $25 with most stores offering it for around $21. Rent this one first, especially if you’re a fan of Chloe. The movie is pretty average in almost every way except for the transfer, which is done very well. There are a couple extras that add a bit to the overall DVD, but don’t have much repeat value.

Note to VCA: It’s nice to see you giving the transfers of your movies such good care. After reading the real credits, which is also a great caring touch that’s very appreciated, I really have to wonder what happened to the behind the scenes video that’s mentioned there.

Extra Note: I recently received an e-mail from VCA regarding their menus. They decided to use the standardized main menu format after some market research made them think consumers wanted simpler, easy to follow menus, which I can understand. They realize now that although it’s a good idea, the execution wasn’t the best here and say they are now working to make them much better in their more recent releases. I have to give VCA a lot of credit here. I’ve been very critical of their menus recently, and rather than acting like they can’t make a mistake, ignoring it, and going on with business as usual, they tried to clear things up. I think somebody once said that you can tell the character of a person by how they handle their mistakes, not how they handle success, which has always made a lot of sense to me. It also speaks very well for VCA and shows that they’ve still got a lot of the class they were showing a couple years ago.
