The Short Story

Initial Expectations: Ninn does a fantastic job of blending sex and art. I’ve heard mixed things about this one, but I still can’t help but have hope.

Initial Reaction: There’s a part of me that’s a little uncertain about this one after watching it, but a large part of me that really liked it. Regardless of the enjoyment factor, I couldn’t help but be extremely impressed with it.

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting a plot-heavy feature with plenty of dialogue or straightforward sex

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are pretty good, and very impressive. The audio is artistic, but at the same time flawless. The video is very nicely presented in anamorphic widescreen. It makes fantastic use of light and feels like it looks just like it was meant to. The only thing about the video that didn’t work for me is that there’s some very frequent ghosting to the picture. It’s probably intentional, but at the same time it did interfere with my watching of the movie.

Music: The music was composed by Loren Alexander and is extremely impressive. It has a mainstream orchestral feel to it much of the time, and moves in and out of the entire movie very well. The music really drew me into the movie, and helped out every single facet of it. Once again, the music is good enough that I really wish there was a soundtrack available on CD for the movie.

Menus: The main menu is very nicely done with a bit of the movie and a little animation, and gives a very good first impression. The chapter menu is unfortunately very generic, and lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene.

The Feature

Good and evil, the present and the past, pleasure and pain. They’re all things that seem to make up Audrey Hollander’s world. Now if only she could figure out what’s happening to her.

Scene 1 - Audrey Hollander and Otto Bauer

Redheaded Audrey starts things out in white face paint, black shoes, and a black veil lying on a rug on a stone staircase which appears to be partially covered with snow as Otto struts around her telling her that he knows what a twisted cunt she is and to show him what she keeps hidden. It’s a very interesting combination with Ninn’s style, and the two merge very well. This is a hot, rough, and very artistic scene.

Scene 2 - Audrey Hollander, Valentina Velasques, and Bruno Sx

Dark haired Valentina starts out the second scene on a bed dressed in a black dress, boots, and short stockings with Otto and Audrey declaring her a whore and telling bald Bruno to make her pay. Scene 3 - Adrianne Rouso, Audrey Hollander, and Niki Blond

Scene 4 - Victoria Swinger and Mike Foster

Victoria starts out the penultimate scene in a white and virginal dress only to be taken by Mike, who’s looking plenty dark in a black suit and mascara. She lifts up a leg so he can tongue her twat before trading places with him to gobble his knob in reciprocation. Victoria moves up to ride Mike in both cowgirls before taking a great facial finish.

This is a short and extremely likeable scene. It stands out from the others nicely with it’s softer feel as well as it’s length, and Victoria also looks absolutely gorgeous. I love the black and white contrast of the scene at the start and how Mike remains fairly generic throughout the scene. This is a hot scene.

Scene 5 - Audrey Hollander, Bruno Sx, Mike Foster, and Otto Bauer

Audrey finishes things up on the same steps she began the movie. Otto waves in Bruno and Mike for them to fuck her face before they go directly to double stuffing her. Audrey breaks off to run away, but Otto takes her back and has the guys keep double stuffing her ass while she asks for a cock in her mouth. Catherine is a very impressive movie. It’s one of those odd movies where part of me wasn’t really sure how much I enjoyed it, but at the same time I was completely enthralled by the movie. Michael Ninn has an extremely artistic visual style, and the combination of it and the music had me completely awed. It’s dark, mysterious, and sexual, with much of the movie feeling like a delusion where you have to figure out what’s real and what’s not. Audrey and Otto do a great job in their roles throughout the movie, and show some very nice emotional range for the non-sex portions while providing hard and driving sex for the scenes.

As for the part of me that wasn’t sure whether or not I enjoyed it, the sex had a dark and hard feeling that I don’t know if I was in the mood for at the time. Otto and Audrey’s relationship is a very intense one, and not something I can really relate to. I’m thrilled that it works for them, but it’s something that I often have to be in just the right mood to watch. It’s also something that I can normally take a little of but not a lot, and with how much the movie revolves around the two of them I think it might have been a little much.

In the end, I can’t help but recommend Catherine to anybody who enjoys artistic porn and hard sex. It is a very ambitious project and it did completely draw me in. That’s always easy to do when you make something straightforward and likeable, but here I think it says even more because for most of the movie I really wasn’t sure how I felt about it. The sex is hard with a very heavy anal emphasis, which might make it a surprise for many feature fans. Catherine might leave a few questions in my head, but I’m definitely very glad I took the time to check it out.

The Extra Stuff

There’s a preview of Disc 2 lasting about eleven and a half minutes. Unfortunately, I rented this one and everybody only seems to offer the first DVD for rental and not the second. Since Ninn Worx released this as both a one and a two disc release, it seems to have caused some confusion and the consumer is the one who appears to be paying for it.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, may of Ninn Worx’s DVDs can be found online for between about $15 and $25 with many stores offering them for under $20. Unless you’ve seen some of Ninn’s work, I’d suggest renting this one first. There’s some hot sex, but it also have a heavily artistic feel. The technical aspects show some very good care, but on this release at least, there isn’t much effort put into the extras. If you want extras, the glimpse that’s given here is impressive enough that I’d recommend going with the two disc version of the release.

Note to Ninn Worx: Although part of me likes you offering movies in both single and double disc editions, having the teaser for the second DVD really makes one feel like they’re missing out. It also appears to lead to some confusion with stores as not all of them appear to carry both editions. Unless you can get things to run a little smoother, I hope you just release one version of your DVDs in the future.
