Blond and Brunettes, which sounds like it's narrated by Chloe, is set in Rome, where Aria Giovanni becomes obsessed with Anita Blond after a one-night encounter with her and her sex slaves. After fantasizing about Anita and her exploits, Aria decides to call Anita again, who is happy to pull Aria into her sexual orbit. From there, jealousy and indulgence between the group unravels their decadent circle of pleasure. While Anita Blond doesn't tickle my Eurobabe fancy as she does for many you, she has an amazing body, as do the other women. Large, natural, and bouncing breasts rule with absolutely no enhancements in sight. You will be a fan of Aria Giovanni and Kyla Cole after seeing this movie, since their makeup, costumes, and magnificent breasts are simply enchanting. One of the reasons Andrew Blake films are so sumptuous is he always uses the best locations to film in. Not only does the background of the streets of Rome make an amazing backdrop, but each of the 30 vignettes looks like it cost a million dollars to shoot. Amazingly, despite a wide variety of techniques and styles used in those 30 scenes, they fit really well together in the work as a whole. I'm so impressed that I'm hard pressed to think of another adult film that comes close to the lavish feel of Blond and Brunettes--except of course other Andrew Blake movies. As we expect, in terms of explicitness Blond and Brunettes is not all that hardcore, but it certainly is a bit harder than a lot of Blake's recent work. There are fairly abundant spread-lipped, gynecological views, and almost all of his shots that draw your eye to the women's nether regions. The girl-girl scenes are a little less lipstick and a little more explicit, although rubbing and finger penetration is about all we get to see. And while explicit cunnilingus still seems out of the question, it's made up for by some excellent eye-candy, including erotic sushi eating, mutual masturbation, topless ponygirl training, and more. After watching Blond and Brunettes, I was puzzled why Ava Vincent and John Decker are credited when they are definitely not in the all-girl movie. It turns out they are on the DVD, just in a separate featurette. Shot in April 2001 in a Los Angeles hotel room, it's an elegant 8-minutes of Ava masturbating on the bed and posing by the balcony door. But the real treat is the rare boy-girl footage, almost completely in black and white of John fucking Ava. Blake stays true to his philosophy of focusing on the female beauty, not the mechanics of the sexual act itself--in fact only about a minute of reverse cowgirl and the pop shot between the tits is truly hardcore. Yet it's a nice little bonus and shows that Blake hasn't gone completely lesbian-only in his work. Overall, Blond and Brunettes is one of Blake's best all-girl videos. It's a stunning photographic work as a whole, and if only there was some more explicit sex (a little visible cunnilingus or dildo use, for example) or if I liked Anita Blond more, then this would have been perfect. As it is, I think that Pin-Ups 2 is still my favorite modern Andrew Blake film. However, of the last three Studio A DVD's I've reviewed, this one is the best of the bunch and certainly worth the premium price, thanks to the great anamorphic transfer, jazzy 5.1 surround soundtrack, and bonus Ava Vincent featurette.
