The Best of John Holmes Volume 1 is a relatively run of the mill let's make a quick buck off of some film footage that we have lying around compilation. The compilation consists of seven scenes with an incredibly scant run time of less than one hour. That alone makes the compilation a poor value since they could have put a lot more scenes on the release.

There is no identification of what films the scenes originally came from, so if you like a scene and want to see the original film, good luck. The scenes all appear to come from the early 80s, although some may have come from the very end of the 70s.

None of these are John Holmes strongest scenes from the large quantity that he managed to churn out over his career. Unless you have to have some Holmes and just can't have any of the actual film, just the sex scenes, there is no reason to pick up this compilation.

VCA has done a disappointing job with this release. The Best of John Holmes Volume 1 is presented in the full screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The transfer quality varies throughout the entire compilation. There are artifacts, grain, print damage, jumps, and a lack of definition throughout the presentation. Some of the scenes the color levels are off with portions of the scenes far lighter than others. Some scenes are incredibly dark with people getting lost in the darkness. VCA has done little to fix the quality of the material in the compilation nor at least create an even presentation.

The Best of John Holmes Volume 1 is presented with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 monaural track. The sound is uneven throughout the presentation with portions of the compilation easy to hear and other portions hard to hear. VCA hasn't done anything to create an even listening experience for the compilation.

VCA has only included one extra on the release. There is a photo gallery with images of John Holmes mixed with stills from films that Holmes was in, some of the stills even feature John Holmes.

The Best of John Holmes Volume 1 is an obviously quickly put together compilation consisting of some random scenes featuring John Holmes. VCA hasn't put much care into this compilation with uneven video and audio quality throughout the presentation and a very short run time. There is no big incentive to add this release to your collection.
