The Movie

Bend Over Boyfriend: A Couples Guide to Male Anal Pleasure is an educational and instructional hardcore video from writer and director Shar Rednour. Bend Over Boyfriend's roots started in the San Francisco woman-oriented sex shop Good Vibrations founded by Joani Blank. By 1998 when Bend Over Boyfriend was conceived, Joani Blank had sold Good Vibrations, and it was a worker-owned cooperative.

Good Vibrations employees Carol Queen, Shar Rednour, and Jackie Strano noticed the increase in interest in women having anal sex with men, also known as pegging; however, there weren't any resources for the growing customer base, and based on their interactions with their customers, a resource was needed. Carol Queen, Shar Rednour, and Jackie Strano decided to make an explicit instructional video so that the growing customer base could safely partake in pegging. Carol Queen also brought in her partner Robert Morgan Lawrence, an expert in anal play.

Good Vibrations didn't produce Bend Over Boyfriend despite Joani Blank producing Great Vibrations with Carol Queen the year prior. Instead, production was done by Nan Kinney and her company Fatale Media making Bend Over Boyfriend the only non-lesbian movie made by Fatale Media.

The term pegging isn't used once in Bend Over Boyfriend. This is because pegging wouldn't enter the sexual vernacular for three more years when it was introduced by Seattle's biweekly newspaper The Stranger “Strange Love” columnist Dan Savage. Dan Savage opened a contest to name the act of a woman having anal sex with a man, and on June 21, 2001, he announced that the winning term was pegging. Interestingly enough, bob was another candidate, which stood for bend over boyfriend, which directly came from this video.

Bend Over Boyfriend is an instructional video on anal sex and anal play, with an emphasis on women giving anal sex to a partner. The video is presented by Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence, who both received their advanced degrees from the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality.

When viewed today, parts of Bend Over Boyfriend seem clunky. However, when watching this video, viewers have to remember, the video is now over 30 years old. The educational aspects of Bend Over Boyfriend feel like they borrowed ideas from the early 1970s white-coaters, except the point of Bend Over Boyfriend is to impart educational material on the viewer, not be a guise to show hardcore material as the old white-coaters did. There are periods when Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence seem stilted when addressing the viewer.

Shar Rednour was creative when putting together the narrative for Bend Over Boyfriend. In addition to Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence giving the viewer information on how to have safe and pleasurable anal play, there are two couples shown (Laura Goodhue and "M" and Cupcake Jones and Troy) who are watching the same video as you the viewer are watching. As the video goes on, the two couples start to explore the type of play that Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence have been discussing.

There are also a few segments with Miss Behavin', M.D., who this reviewer suspects may not be an actual medical doctor, but dispenses good medical advice for viewers beginning with anal play.

The end of the video is a montage of Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence showing off the techniques that they have been discussing along with both sets of couples showing off the methods that they have watched Carol Queen and Robert Morgan Lawrence address.

Bend Over Boyfriend feels more educationally oriented than entertainment-oriented, which is different than a lot of educational and instructional videos today. As a result, the video can be dry at times. However, viewers have to remember that Bend Over Boyfriend was one of the earliest authentic educational videos on the market and was setting the standard, not trying to improve upon it. When looked at today, Bend Over Boyfriend can come across as preachy; however, for its time, it was groundbreaking.

Over thirty years after it was created, Bend Over Boyfriend still serves as a great educational tool for viewers who want to learn safe home-style techniques for anal play and pegging. Safe sex techniques are demonstrated throughout the video instead of “porn movie sex” techniques. Bend Over Boyfriend also makes a fascinating watch for viewers interested in the history of educational videos.

The Edition

The edition of Bend Over Boyfriend screened is the streaming-only edition available on PinkLabel.TV.

Fatale Media has done an excellent job with their streaming-only edition of Bend Over Boyfriend: A Couples Guide to Male Anal Pleasure. Bend Over Boyfriend was shot on video, and the 1/2” Betacam masters were used to make a high definition file for this release. Bend Over Boyfriend is presented in the Academy aspect ratio of 1.33:1 pillarboxed to 1.78:1. For a shot on video movie, Bend Over Boyfriend looks fantastic. There is grain present in darker scenes, and there are occasional video glitches. The colors in the video are excellent. This reviewer isn't sure how Fatale Media made a 31-year-old shot on video movie look this great, but they succeeded at it.

Bend Over Boyfriend is presented with a Stereo audio track. There is a low hiss present throughout the video; however, the viewer quickly gets accustomed to it, so it isn't a distraction. The dialog in the video is clear and easy to understand at all times.

Fatale Media didn't include any extras with their streaming-only edition of Bend Over Boyfriend. However, there is a five-minute advert for productions related to the video that you could buy at Good Vibrations at the time after the video.

Final Thoughts

Bend Over Boyfriend: A Couples Guide to Male Anal Pleasure is the first educational video made to instruct couples of how to safely perform pegging and other anal play ever made. In over 30 years, Bend Over Boyfriend has aged far better than one would expect. Aspects are dated, and other elements are a little clunky; however, all of the educational material is still very viable today, and writer/director Shar Rednour came up with some fun ideas of how to pass the information onto the viewer. Fatale Media has done an excellent job with its streaming-only edition on PinkLabel.TV with better than expected sound and picture quality.
