Assassins (Digital Playground) (DVD + Blu-Ray Combo Pack) Review

Blu-Ray vs. DVD: As usual, the Blu-Ray disc is very similar to the DVD with a few minor changes. The menus have a slightly different style and don't identify the performers, but are still very effective and I really like the style of how they're done. As for the extras, the photo gallery is only available to view as a slide show and there's fourteen trailers instead of eight. The movie still looks fantastic, but with the added resolution the Blu-Ray offers it's just a little crisper.

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are very well done. The audio is clear and well balanced and I didn't notice any background noises. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen and looks great. It's well lit, clear, and has very smooth camera work.

Music: The music works well in the movie and normally rests very quietly in the background.

Menus: The main menu is a bit bland, and blends a still with a few clips from the movie and a decent background style. The chapter menu is very generic, and lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a chapter number that doesn't correspond to the chapter numbers in the movie.

The Feature

Jesse and Bibi are rival assassins for unseen boss Farley. When Jesse wants in on Bibi's classier assignments thinking she can do just as well, middle man Rocco decides they should team up. Jesse isn't happy, but sooner or later they're going to have to figure out how to work together.

Bottle blonde Bibi struts up to Erik as he plays pool in a fake fur coat before dropping it at his command. The interaction between them was part of what really made this scene work for me. There isn't a lot of interaction between Jesse and Bibi, but there's just enough to kick things up a notch while remaining couples friendly. There's also a very nice balance between the girls that should please fans of Bibi as well as Jesse. This is a very nice final scene.

Assassins is a fun little adult feature. There's a nice hint of Charlie's Angels (complete with Rocco in the Bosley role) that Bibi and Jesse play into nicely. The plot isn't ever heavy or deep and the action isn't every overly heavy, but the movie is fun and the setups work well enough to give the movie a bit of substance without ever spending too much time on the setups. The sex is nicely consistent through the movie with good chemistry and a nice eye behind the camera and in the editing bay to give this one some nice style to go with the sexual substance. Sexually this one is as couples friendly as you'd expect from Digital Playground, but that doesn't mean it's overly soft as there's some good action in each of the sex scenes. Assassins might not be overly deep in any way, but it is a nice little fuck flick with a nice sense of style and just enough substance to not let it feel too empty.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts sixteen minutes. After a few shots around the set of girls with guns, Bibi chats with Jamal about the weather before Jesse moves in to talk about her early Bibi experience and Bibi has a little fun with Manuel. Riley has a little fun chatting with Jamal around the set before Bibi chats with Jamal a little more. There's also a little chatting with Rocco talking about his first Digital Playground movie as well as some fun talking about Riley on one of her first shoots. There's also some fun with the girls and Marco to wrap things up. This is a fun behind the scenes featurette. You get some nice fun around the set as well as some great personalty and eye candy. This is a nice addition tot he overall DVD.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, many Digital Playground DVD + Blu-Ray Combo packs can be found online for between about $24 and $30. At the low end this isn't a bad price. The movie is fairly light and fun, but also has some nice sex. The technical aspects and extras show the care you've come to expect from Digital Playground, and this being a DVD & Blu-Ray Combo makes it all the better. This is a well done release.
