Art School Sluts Review

Initial Thoughts
Eon MaKai has been toasted as one of the true visionary directors working in hardcore cinema. I've read nothing but good things so I'm very excited to watch it.

The Film
I'm not going to describe the storyline to this video because there really isn't one past the first ten minutes. Essentially, Mia goes to art school and is bored. She has sex. That's about it...
So, OK. This movie is porn. That's fine, but what else does this movie have to do or say? Well, the movie is kinda a self-indulgent satire of hipsters, art school, and the artist-in-name-only types which populate all the major cities of America. But when it comes to actually presenting an intelligent satire of these types and behaviors, Art School Sluts is a failure.
The movie tries incredibly hard to be and say something but doesn't ever graduate above the level standard porn material. Even the opening sequence which is obviously designed to evoke thoughts of Cronenberg's Crash but fails in really meaning anything. The second sex scene, according to the commentary track, is an homage to Morgan Fisher's sublime short film Production Stills. Well, I see the connection but without the commentary track to explain it, I would have had no idea.
That sort of thing is exactly what could have made this movie work, but instead the references are either lame or so well buried, they loose any sort of effectiveness they might have had. The sex scenes are also shot with no stylistic edge to elevate them beyond standard screwing.
It is very apparent that Eon McKai has respect for great cinema, both hardcore and experimental, but despite his claim this this movie was shot and edited to evoke the feelings hardcore cinema of the 1970s and 80s, but as far as I'm concerned the way this movie was shot does not differ one bit from from any other modern porn.
Here's the part that gets me most personally. I'm 19. Seriously, I'm 19. I live in Wicker Park, the most hipster and art kid full neighborhood in Chicago. I'm a total hipster myself and was really excited to see a dirty movie which was about and supposedly featured people similar to those who live in my neighborhood. Well, to add another disappointment to the already mounting list, the actors in this movie are the typical porn types and do not even come close to resembling actual art kids or hipsters. All the women are devoid of body hair, the men are muscled and hairless as well. Sorry, but I am the real deal and no one I know or have screwed personally who are into this scene (sorry for my crass language) shave their hair or look anything like porn stars. Only one who kinda looks the part is "James Deen."
So, overall I would have to say a sincere effort but a very incomplete one.

A/V Quality
Very good. This movie was shot on video and looks very nice. VCA has always been very good at presenting clear picture and well mixed films and this one is no exception.

Extras
Not bad at all. There's a commentary track which provides some good insights into the movie. Everyone seems drunk and has a good time. It's not a great commentary but I had more fun listening to it than the movie itself. Extras also include a cute making of, as well as a scene from the great Cafe Flesh, and stranger still, a wonderful 2 minute clip from Chuck Vincent's 1980 stop motion piece Le Toy shoppe...

All I can say is "just OK." But Eon, I'm still gonna look at more of your stuff.
