Bismarck, North Dakota. It’s Matthew Matters’ 18th birthday and daddy (Brett Anderson) suggests over breakfast that he take Junior to the Arcade on Highway 9 that evening to celebrate this coming of age. This was the prologue.

The film ends with a return to the breakfast scene that started things off with it being Junior’s birthday and dad telling him he plans to take him to the Arcade that evening. It’s a weak ending straight out of Invaders from Mars. The director/writer is right in that it needs to end with the birthday boy, but this was not it. Perhaps he was hesitant to show daddy and son now getting it on together. (If you want to see Junior suck his daddy’s dick, you can see Matthew giving Brett head in the fluffer section.) But it needed some sort of epiphany with the young man. The mere fact that he seems more knowing regarding the Arcade the second time around is too subtle.

It’s a masterful production! Joe Gage has once again brought Titan glory. As to be expected with this studio it is well photographed. The actors read their lines well. Matthew Matters has just the right gung-ho quality for Junior and Cole Ryan is exceptionally good as the shy neophyte longing to learn from an older man. Josh West, Cam Kurtz, Adam Young, and Ken Marks are also standouts in a fine cast. Titan rewards them by identifying them for the viewers.

ARCADE ON ROUTE 9 is well over three and a half hours. In the same length of time I could have seen Scarlett O’Hara go though three husbands, witnessed the burning of Atlanta, and heard Rhett Butler tell her he didn’t give a damn. I would not however have gotten off umpteen times. I hope there really is an Arcade in North Dakota. Before this I thought the only thing to visit in Bismarck was Mount Rushmore.
