Afrodite Superstar Review

Synopsis
Director Venus Hottentot brings us this, the first release under the aegis of Candida Royalle's new Femme Chocolat line . As per the Candida format, the dvd is story driven, with the sex shown primarily as flavoring, and of course, from/for a woman's enjoy ment/perspective .

The Story
Lovely Simone Valentino plays Afrodite, a girl who gets sucked up & into the 'star making machine' of the pop/rap business, where the dollar is king, and substance is shunned . The usual celebrity pitfalls/stereotypes ensue : Afrodite's natural dark & curly hair is ditched in favor of a long blond wig . She lipsynchs, while her best friend( played by India, yummy !) is the artiste behind the artifice . Some of the stereotypes parodied here are funny....Afrodite has a (planned ?) 'wardrobe malfunction/nip slippage'( think : Little Kim at the VMA's), on national tv that boosts her profile even higher . Also, 'thug/gangsta' rapper 'Criminal'(Justin Long) has to suffer the 'shame' of being outed for who he REALLY is....a college graduate !! The horror. LOL. Into this journey is the search for Afrodite to be 'real', and to find 'real' love with her record label boss, 'CEO' aka Mr Marcus . Does Afrodite ditch the plastic pop schtick and get 'real'? Does she ever get 'real' buzy with Mr Marcus ? Will college-boy Criminal ever recover his 'street cred' ? LOL. I dunno, watch and learn .

The Sex
Umm..... Solo masturbation by Afrodite . Girl/Girl lovin' between India ( nope, sorry, NO B/G w/India here !)& Liliana Velasquez. A tryst between Justin Long & ReVay . A coupling with Jay Junker and Sativa Verte . And, the climactic pairing of Simone and Mr Marcus .

Summary
Kudos to Candida, Venus, & A & E for bringing something new to the porn table . Really enjoyed the spoofage of the way business-as-usual in the record game promotes & perpetuates artiface & commerce over substance and genuine expression . Unfortunately, for me as a male anyhow, the sex was substandard . There were moments were heat would spark...the Jay/Sativa scene....and notably during the Simone/Mr Marcus sheet romp, where what gets built up, ends in an incomplete, or truncated manner . Not showing a 'pop' is one thing, and ok I can deal to some extent with that, even Skinemax kinda lets you feel when the sex has crescendoed and climaxed . Here, most of the time, it just seems like a bad edit, or a pg-13 cut of the movie has been slipped to me . In fairness, maybe these things that I found problematic will be the things that appeal the most to the female viewer it's geared to reach . Even Mrs B felt it " needed more spice to the sex" . Still, it should be interesting to see what Venus/Candida come up with in future offerings . peace, barrettman .
