  I've toyed with the idea of a NAS but I won't store anything on hard drives without offline backups (no matter what kind of data) and off site (i.e. online) backup solutions for NAS can be very expensive. For this reason I use a 24TB external hard drive connected to my Mac and backed up with BackBlaze. The basic BackBlaze plan has no storage limit but it only works with drives connected to a computer (i.e. not a NAS system). In case of a disaster they will break your data up into 8TB zipped chunks and mail it to you on however many hard drives it takes.   I'm guessing the only way to "fix" the tracking lines would be to crop the frame a little smaller. In any case I think the go-to software for easy DIY upscaling is Topaz Video AI. Some people cobble together a complex workflow using various command line tools but Topaz AI is easy peasy and gives really good results. As you say though, garbage in / garbage out. If the source material isn't great you can't expect miracles. But for well lit / well shot / well authored DVD from the early 2000's I've seen pretty stunning results. That material as the advantage that a lot of it was damn good quality to start with for SD video.

  I gotta say it kinda sucks being a DVD collector 2 decades later and getting a rare Platinum X DVDs with this horrible chromatic fringing. Anything from 2004/5 I tend to avoid because I'm worried it will look like shit. All the actresses have 4 eyebrows… their actual eyebrows and then a blue/green pair off to the right. LOL. Oh well.   Bear in mind this movie is from 2002. The in-camera image quality wouldn’t have been as good as with today’s equipment. VLC wouldn’t be an issue.

  Here's a funny thing, most of the DVDs that RLD produced and released in red had playing issues like pixalating, and freezing, but the the legal normal DVD that are produced today, don't have any those issues as I have both the red and normal (ex. silver) to compare. Yup. I ended up accumulating THREE copies of the same RLD title from various American sellers trying to find a copy that would play smoothly (all red disks). No luck. Finally got a copy off Jeedoo produced on a normal silver disk by Platinum X Europe and it plays perfectly! I also finally just found a disk I’ve been searching for for years… and it’s on a red disk. I accidentally bought something from them on ADM (didn't realize they were the seller and didn't notice the DVD was a sleeved reproduction and almost certainly a bootleg) so I emailed within minutes of my order asking for a refund and… total silence. I collect old DVDs and although I’m often happy to get a red copy because I know it’s an original first run, I have had issues making ISO backups of the red disks more than once! Although they will play in a physical drive. It’s frustrating though because I want to view them via my media app because it’s 2023 now, not 2005.
