- This American Life 4/6/2020 11:05:08 AM My current list of shows, as they appear on my Recently Updated list on my phone: The Happiness Lab -- not bad, not great. A lot of what she suggests are things I'm not going to do. Fox News Rundown -- I listen to NPR on the radio. I find Fox News is a good balance. Between this, NPR and the BBC I get a decent sense of what's out there. The Upgrade -- from Lifehacker. It's fun and picked up a couple bits of useful info. I like the weekly personal upgrade segment at the end the best. The rest of the show is an interview and it varies with the quality of the guest (as almost all interview shows do). BBC World Service Global News Podcast -- my source for foreign news and an outside-the-US perspective on things. Car Talk -- I've heard the...
- Home DNA test kits 2/9/2018 7:52:42 PM Pedigrees just do not interest me. That's one of the reasons I'm not interested in DNA testing for ancestry--I'm going to turn out to be such a mutt that what difference does it make? I'd much rather have the DNA test that would tell me my genetic defects--which diseases I'm likely to develop, etc.
- This American Life 1/13/2018 11:27:09 PM My current subscriptions include: Longform - the Playboy Interview of podcasts. Great if you like hearing people interviewed for 30+ minutes, rather than in 6-8 minute bits like most others. Also tends to be interviews of people who typically do the interviewing--lots of NPR, New Yorker, newspaper reporters. Good stuff. BBC Global News Podcast - so I can hear about things outside the US, and don't entirely consist of reactions of Trump's tweets History of England - the podcaster is a hoot. He presents a serious history but he has a great sense of humor and uses it. Bullseye with Jesse Thorn - IMO it's Fresh Air with an emphasis on pop culture, whereas FA is more omniverous Hollywood & Levine - the podcast version of Ken Levine's blog, whi...

- The perfect cup size for you? 1/10/2018 9:47:32 PM ^ okay, I'll bite. Why not? I realize that there's a chest component (in inches: 32, 34, 36, 38, etc.), and a 40D is a hell of a lot larger than a 32 D. But that said, I thought cups were calculated on the difference in diameter of the chest vs the fullest part of the breast? So a D cup is larger than an A cup or a B cup. Isn't that "breast size?" Getting into the minutae of bra sizes is like analyzing a joke. It takes all the fun out of it.

- [locked] 1/7/2018 6:37:05 PM That would be a lot more effective if you contacted Drew or Steph and bought a proper ad.
- The perfect cup size for you? 1/6/2018 5:21:40 PM Depends on the woman. Boobs vary by shape and how they're hung, as well as by volume. That said, I'll go with DD.

- 1st World Problems (21st Century edition) 12/31/2017 6:17:15 PM I'm perennially pissed off that the podcast player on my phone is such a piece of shit that it never plays the next podcast I think it should play on its own. Unless I specifically make up the playing order, it'll always choose the wrong thing. And no matter how I have things ordered from Oldest to Newest, it will always pick the "newest" of the next podcasts. That's fine for things like Freakenomics where each episode is self-contained, but sucks for most of my 'casts, which are serialized and have to be listened to in-order to make any sense at all. And I'm so angry at iTunes I can't even begin to discuss it rationally here.
- This American Life 6/24/2017 2:50:56 PM ^^ Sorry, I didn't listen to S-town to something to say. Was that the one about Richard Simmons? I'm listening to Invisibilia and feeling similar to last year's. Disappointment, but not sure why--and for some reason I just don't feel like going back to Season 1 to figure out whether my expectations were too high or if they really did change. I do like S3 better than last year but still conflicted. Excellent example was Future Self, the most recent (as I type this) episode. Started out great and I was really into it. As someone who suffers from slight-to-moderate levels of debilitating shyness and inhibitions, the idea of hypnosis as a way to treat it is fascinating to me. Then when they got near the end, and if you've heard it you know the...

And you'd get endless lists of names and nothing else. And no matter how many you'd specify--the topic would be "Top 10" and you'd get answers with 50 names anyway.
- Today's Movie Stars Look Younger Than Past Stars 6/24/2017 12:31:25 PM People age differently. Some age hard, some age easily. Some is genetics. Some is lifestyle. Some comes from the help of good plastic surgery. Plus, you rarely see celebs in real life situations. You typically see them when they've been professionally made up, lit, dressed and hair-styled--and even then, the image may be photoshopped (or airbrushed, or whatever) afterward. That makes a huge difference. My local PBS stations have largely given over to fund-raising specials all weekend, every weekend. They have a lot of baby-boomer-friendly celebs on to pass the hat. I just saw Marilyn McCoo, the singer from the 5th Dimension and her own solo career. I think she's 74 now. Doesn't look it. How much of it is the knife, and how much of it is mak...
