  I'm wondering if all this fantastic advice skirts around the issue because I am able to watch what I've recorded on my DVD. Doesn't this in and of itself suggest that the disc has been finalized?

  Thanks for volunteering your time. Ninja has recapped my situation accurately. When I attempt to view the disc in my PC, there is no information attached to it of the nature you specify. In fact it appears to be blank. Though there were no files to view, I wanted to see what would happen if I selected "erase disc". And, sure enough, there was a graphic indicating that erasing was in progress and ultimately that the task was done. I tried to repeat the process but was given a "no information on disc" message when I did. So, the drive recognized the video when it was instructed to erase it and doesn't recognize it otherwise.
