  I think the thing to look for is the kind of connections it has. A FireWire 800 enclosure will cost more than a USB2, but it'll be a lot faster. This, of course, assumes your computer would have a FW800 card. This may be a minor thing, but you might find the blinking lights annoying when there's drive activity. I sometimes work in dim lighting, and one of my enclosures has bright blue and red lights that get irritating even if I have them facing away from me. If you found your internal failing and are now looking for a new external drive, I recently got the Iomega 33656 Professional Silver Series 500 GB Triple Interface External Hard Drive at Amazon, and I'm pretty happy with it.

  Also wanted to note that a couple of years ago, my old Powerbook's HDD died on me, and I was lucky to have started regular backups to an external. I had a new drive installed, copied the backup over, and it was back to work as usual. It's a lot easier to do this (and less stressful), than to have to hire a data recovery specialist if your drive dies on you. And, with Leopard, it's very easy to set up for automatic backups. If you're not on Leopard, Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html) is really great.

  Just a couple of weeks ago, I got the Iomega 33656 Professional Silver Series 500 GB Triple Interface External Hard Drive at Amazon for $200. You can get another 500 GB HDD for less, but having the firewire 800 was what sold me. It's fast enough that I can edit with my MacBook Pro using the external as scratch. (It might be possible with regular FW or USB2, but I haven't tested that.) I think it's true you can never have enough storage, but there's a sweet spot for hard drive prices right now, and 500 GB seems to be a good value.

  I'm shooting with the Sony SR-7 and have no problems. I edit using Final Cut Express, and there is support for AVCHD.
