  The true hardcore fan of porn still goes out and rents I think. But since the internet provides direct to consumer content and offers more privacy to people who don't want to be seen in a smut shop; Internet porn is definitely taking in more dollars. Plus with Piracy and file sharing becoming so popular you can pretty much almost find anything that you would buy at a smut shop for free so the die hard internet fans really don't even have to pay or leave the house. If your not all ready a well established producer than it's going to be quite difficult to sell a lot of DVDs off the shelf.
