  I'm a big McGrath fan. I finished Port Mungo a couple of weeks ago, little different than his other stuff but still quite mad. Asylum is my favorite, and Dr.Hagard's Disease. I'm about 1/4 way through The Rise of American Democracy Jefferson to Lincoln. Take me the rest of the summer to finish, but what a great era and great story. You couldn't make that stuff up.

  I like the vignette idea, too, its much better than the throw-the-girl-on-a-couch-fuck-all-her-holes-next girl-please genre.   As for The Godfather, I've always regarded it as the ultimate male "weepie". Gone With the Wind for those who hate chick flicks. A highly romanticized and juvenile view of the Mob. Pacino was catatonic and Brando as false as the cotton in his mouth. Entertaining, I just don't see anything great about it. As for Citizen Kane, I prefer even the truncated version of Magnificent Ambersons to Kane, and I like Touch of Evil more than them nowadays. Welle's highly theatrical view of movies and life seem more appropriate to a lurid crime drama. Citizen Kane suffers from that unbelievably awful my-girlfriend-is-going-to-be-an-opera-singer-no-matter-what subplot. I'm still in awe of some of Welles technical achievements, though, especially...
