  Every commodity has better or worse product, especially with high demand. But producers aren't stupid and realize why go to the trouble of working harder and spending more bills when you can skate and make more back on a less expensive product. I prefer the story driven porno since it has the chance to heighten the sexual aura of the girls (who aren't always as sexy as they appear), granted the story is titillating and the scene is directed well-enough.

  I work in the adult industry and started in mainstream - kind of an ass-backwards approach, but since I'm such a fan of fine asses, it's working out - but few non-industry folk realize the difficulties inherent in creating story-driven porn. Most of these performers prefer to do gonzo since they are in-and-out (figuratively and literally) in a couple hours. If they have dialogue they are forced to hang around the set for the whole day (and miss the chance of the golden double-booking). Many are now requesting an additional 'modest' fee to do dialogue which of course raises the budget even more (and a dialogue sex film takes more time/money to produce in general).   Almost any director in the Evil Angel Empire is worth space on your developing shelf of titles. My personal favorites from that company are the old-timers (performers that became true erotic artists); John Leslie, Christoph Clark, Joey Silver and of course John Stagliano. Rocco's titles are amazing too! Some are feature oriented (with a story) but most are gonzo (sex, sex, SEX!).

  European girls are generally more mature at a younger age than their State-side counterparts. Not to diminish the American way, but Europeans are better educated, more culturally developed and have a less hypocritical traditional value system. That's not to say there aren't any perfectly cool and hip US sluts nor any snot-nosed Euro-porn-trash. And I think in Eastern Europe you find the hotter looking chics because the economy is more desperate. They spill out of the woodwork to get such high-paying gigs (for their more depressed Czech, Slovak, Romanian, Hungarian economies) as porno offers.   Unfortunate that John Leslie uses Euro-chics? Why so? I adore the Eurasian look that Leslie travels to find in Buda and Praha. But, I think I even read once in an old interview with Leslie how he traveled to Europa just to get talent to show up. While certain agencies are getting a lot more pro about making sure their talent shows to your production, it is one of the biggest hassles to making porn.

  A lot of Gonzo productions are shot in one day...since the location costs (and crew/make-up - generally offer a more full-day-abuse price than per-scene) and/or time constraints of the performer/director make it smarter for the title to be done fast. However, many are made very slowly at a scene-a-day (though the scene may only take a few hours to complete), and can take a director a week or two to accumulate the entire 4-6 scene's on that basis. Back in the 70's and 80's features could take a week to two to shoot but these day's a director is VERY lucky to get 3 or 4 days in a budget total. Many features are shot in two days and I've been on a number of one-day-er's (agh...long). The bottom-line is that scheduling is a nightmare in an i...

  I agree also...of course, there are whole series devoted to this infatuation by most companies...but the European directors seem to have a similar addiction (Christoph Clark, Marc Dorcel, Woodman).   The 4 g's, (from what I've discerned while being a shooter/editor for a little while) is middle-to-high end of the direct-for-pay slave-spectrum. Realize what the poor smuck who wants to direct has to go through for the ever-dwindling paycheck. Set-up the deal with the production company (read, be told how to make his movie or else), conceptualize/write the script (if it's a feature...), deal with the agencies and talent (oh my god...), get the gear packed (try and get everything on-the-cheap), hire a few production peeps (deal with getting fair rates for make-up, lighting help, PA's), get the location ($100 an hour to $1200 for the day), shoot the thing (if everyone shows up) and then follow through with an editor (unless he/she cuts the p...

  It doesn't have to be an etched-in-stone choice. Pick one and if you don't like the working style of the boss, head elsewhere. As a filmmaker in this nasty-side of cinema, Spielgler has been a very professional, honest and direct man to deal with. Less drama, if you're serious about this thing, will mean less spent energy on your part. But all the choices above are stellar. If you do not get the push from one of then you can ALWAYS SWITCH. And in fact some agents will have different contacts and sphere's of influence within the industry to make switching a positive choice for an even longer career. But if you're a flake or love drama, there's many many more agents to offer you representation out there.

  Toby - You just got a good speil from one of the best, smartest and most entertaining shooters and director in the business. To reach his level of accomplishment you have to have his admirable experience and skill set. But I have to add to the naysayers in a way, since production, whether it's adult or mainstream can be a hard nut to crack. It's a very gypsy-like life with a feast or famine flow of paycheck's and ridiculously long on-set hours which preclude any normal sense of a social life. The money in either world can be pretty good, depending on your ability to find your niche, but also a questionable balance between in what you spend in time to reach your goals and what you get in return.

  Mmmm...the comments made about bathing were to suggest you are going to loose your shirt. And that doesn't mean you're going to be shirtless, shoe-less and toothless, but more likely than not, going to go broke. Definitely look at your business plan deeply and grant yourself at least a couple years before seeing any potential profit. Also, be aware that there are occasional STD (sexually transmitted diseases) outbreaks that coarse through the entire industry and no matter how many times you shower, you're fucked. Some do not go away, although there are series of shots available to protect yourself (Hepatitis and HPV). You sure you want to go through with this...?

  Might I suggest anything in Evil Angel's line-up.   I used to hear stories about him while I was in the pit's of low-budget mainstream, though I never had the chance to work with him. The most colorful story was about how after attending his old friend Orson Welles funeral, he ended up with the urn and his ashes in the trunk of his car. Story goes that those famous/infamous ashes drove around with Mr. Graver for over 2 years before someone asked him what it was inside the urn.... Mr. Graver definitely did his time and was a legend in both adult and mainstream worlds.
