I buy very few dvds nowadays. I prefer downloading porn on the internet. There are sites with tens to hundreds videos I like and it costs 15-30 dollars. For that price I can get 1-3 dvds from a shop. And there are more and more HD content as well. Often it doesn't look much better than dvd, but other times it's significantly better.

Well, technically quality is quantity. More capisity -> higher bitrate -> better quality. More pixels -> better quality. More capasity -> higher sample rate -> better sound, etc etc. It is relatively easy to change dvd-players (comparing to producing totally new hardware like HD-DVD or blu-ray) the way they can play HD video from usual dvd9 disk. The only thing is that they could store just a bit over one hour of content. This way even CD could contain HD video, only 6 mins of it. One may say this can be solved with multiple disks. Well, have you ever seen 6h single-dvd compilations? I have, they aren't that high quality in my opinion. Why they release them on single disk? I don't know, save few bucks I guess.
