I heartily agree with Pringles that people spend too much time arguing about which distro is best. He's right. Just learn Linux if you want to although I realize this is a time committment many people are not willing to make. One of the best Linux learning tools is the book The Linux Command Line. I have a paperback and a Kindle copy. Regarding RTF documents, has anyone tried AbiWord? I have had great luck with 10 year old or more WordPerfect files that AbiWord handles flawlessly although I can't recall that I specifically tried it with RTF docs. Just a suggestion that might help. I always thought Indecent Propo sal would have been a great porn movie. Two things happened with this one that we never got to see as they were sacrificed to the cutting room floor. Ashlyn Gere actually had a small cameo in the movie that was cut for time. This was when she was trying to do a mainstream crossover; she even appeared in an old X-Files episode billed as Kimberly Ashlyn Gere. Sheena Easton also had a cameo as a lounge singer, which was cut for time although they did use songs from her album No Strings. Get a Live DVD of Linux Mint. Google it and a list of vendors will appear. Order it from whomever you like for $5 or $10. This allows you to try it without actually installing it on your machine. Other possibilities are Ubuntu and Manjaro. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Although I feel your pain, I am comforted by the fact that others are as fed up with MS as I was when I left it behind years ago.

I must chime in as a VLC fan. Make sure you have an up to date version if you are having problems. I also highly recommend Totem player.

I haven't bought a new computer in years. New Egg dot com has great deals on refurbished machines many of which are corporate trade ins and in great shape. Buy a refurb you like for around $200 and have a great machine. Install an extra large hard drive to hold the porn library. Load your favorite version of GNU Linux and never look back. I haven't. I recommend LinuxMint, Ubuntu or Manjaro for beginners. Good luck.

For those that would like to try Linux, here are a couple of suggestions. The Xfce desktop environment looks and feels a lot like XP. This can be comforting for a beginner and was how I got started. There are many good online resources for all flavors of Linux. Ubuntu and Fedora forums are very good. There are stickies on most forums to tell you how to install all the drivers you need to make your computer behave the way you expect it to. Right now I'm using Fedora 17, and there are some annoying little bugs but the other side of that is there are no viruses, ever. And it doesn't cost anything. So if you're feeling a little adventurous and would like to try something new, give it a shot. You might be surprised.

Cubesnake, I'm not saying that your NAS is poor quaility. I just think that in general, a lot of consumer NAS devices are seriously overpriced for lowest bidder parts. Stipulated, I don't think this would be so easy to do with Window$, but I would be interested to know if someone does something similar with M$ software.

I DO have a backup of my removable drives. That's why I use them. You can do an old fashioned brute force copy or you can use rsync. The strategy that I came up with this was to make it easy to have multiple back up drives, storing some away from my house just in case. Antec makes a fairly good inexpensive caddy. Generally, I don't do much encoding as an image suffices for me to watch the movies. Viewing with VLC, I have the same menus I would playing the DVD, but I can click everything with the trackball. This is not sophisticated but it's easy and works for me. Also, I learned a lot about Linux doing this and I recommend it as a way to have multiple, inexpensive and easy backups without spending a lot of money on poor quality NAS devices.

Does anyone else use hot swapable hard drive caddies? Hard drives are relatively inexpensive and you can get reliable ones for reasonable prices. I get about 200 DVD quality movies per drive and can have 3 mounted at once in my current machine. For me, this is cheaper than NAS, and also, less wear and tear on the drives because all of them are not always mounted and running.
