  Birth rates for women under 30 have declined dramatically, while rates for women over 30 are increasing. That's a good thing. It generally means the children being born will have a mom with an education, decent financial support, and an actual desire to be a mother. The USA doesn't need to worry about birth rates, anyhow. Native born Americans have been below the replacement rate of 2.1 since the early 1970's. We make up for it in immigrants, just like we have since the very beginning of this nation - all the largest population booms here have been immigrant waves.

  ^Around here that would have only resulted in a bunch of guys patting each other on the back and making plans to band together after they got out to "give that bitch what she's got coming". It has only been within the last 15-20 years that domestic violence has been taken anything like seriously in my area. I still remember, quite clearly, the police arriving and just taking him "for a walk around the block - to cool off". Women can't win. If they have the courage to reach out for protection, it isn't there. If they suffer in silence, they can't escape. If they escape without protection, they die.

  I think I might understand. Quite a few years ago, when I was still an entertainer, I ran into a situation one year when I made just a few thousand dollars more than I'd made the year before (around 4 thousand more) but when it came time for taxes, and I was expecting to pay about the same as I had the year before it turned out I now owed about 6 thousand more in taxes - quite a bit more than I had earned, but because my earnings had put me over the edge into the new bracket it had screwed me. I felt as though I had been penalized for earning money, since I owed it all, and then some, in taxes. Effectively, I had earned 2 thousand LESS even though I had worked 4 thousand MORE.
