  Thanks for the tip, WillBlast - good scene! The triangle is a kind of daisy chain, come to think of it. In the scene you mentioned, all 3 girls are reclined on the ground.   ^ I'm in higher ed, and here's my theory of why this sort of things happens so often with college professors. Academics, like attorneys or medical doctors, are highly specialized professionals with advanced degrees and years of training in their field. Unlike attorneys or doctors, college professors do not make a lot of money. (Many colleges have no faculty or only a handful earning what a 25-year-old attorney straight out of law school earns.) What colleges give their faculty, instead of lots of money, is autonomy. They're mostly left to do as they see fit, in deference to their professional qualifications. Republican-controlled legislatures have enacted many voter suppression schemes not related to voter ID, for instance, ones meant to discourage voter registration campaigns. The Obama administration blocked voter suppression schemes in Texas and South Carolina because they did not comply with the Voting Rights Act. Those two states are subject to heightened scrutiny because of their history of discriminating against minority voters.

  ^ I agree that people living in rural areas are unlikely to lack driver's licenses. That claim struck me as odd when I read first read it. As for college IDs not having date of birth, this is true but irrelevant for the purposes of voter ID. When you go to your polling place, it's not a question of proving that you're eligible to vote (this happens earlier, when you register to vote) but of proving that you are in fact the person whose name is on the voter rolls. Date of birth is not needed here. Same goes for out-of-state driver's licenses. If you're registered to vote in state A, having already provided documentation to prove residence in that state, but your license is from state B, state B's license is sufficient to prove your identity ...

  ^ No, you don't. I used to live in Connecticut and ID is not required at polling places unless you didn't provide ID at the time you registered to vote. These schemes run the gamut from burdening voter registration drives with needless bureaucracy, to requiring forms of ID that college students, the poor and minority voters are less likely to have, to instructing election officials not to help voters who are in the wrong polling place and then throwing out votes cast at the wrong polling place.
