And yet, as insane as it got, it had The Best advice column, in terms of common-sense, level-headed answers, that I'd ever seen in a men's magazine. I take it you never saw Nugget from that era. Hustler would have looked like Oui compared to that. I don't if Nugget is still around, but I shudder to think what it might be like now if it were.

  I never understood how you could really make a movie that integrated hardcore sex. The closest I've seen was Boogie Nights. The problem, at least in the movies I've seen, is that the storyline stops when the sex starts, and then gets picked up again afterward. The closest analog I can think of is a movie musical, where the story stops for a song, except that in most musicals the song carries part of the load. It reflects character, or it explains what's going on, or in some cases it does advance the story. Tough to see how you can do that with hardcore sex scenes. Or maybe you'd have to cut them down, and not have the performers do six positions every time.

  I've done both. I'm not expert enough to have an opinion on which is better in which circumstance. I typically marinate if I think about it ahead of time; I usually rub because it requires no real prep.
