Kami - If you find world news RELAXING, thanks, but I think I'm not gonna take any advice from you then on how to relax! JP

Ramsey - Chico makes fun of fat people? I didn't know that, good thing I never met him, he'd trash the shit out of this fat pig. BTW, you asked specifics of how I knew who was still shooting. I don't. I have no day-to-day connections with porn any more. I just got it from the concrete and oft-repeated instances mentioned on the various and sundry sites, and when people chime in how the Slain Wayne thing was a scheduled shoot or some other detail, I think it's pretty clear that no matter what the truth of the details may or may not be, there's shooting going on. • IDs/info asked from late 80s/early 90s performers 5/5/2004 5:57 PM
Not used to seeing 'em with their clothes on, but here's what I think: 1. Crystal Breeze 2. Can't recall 3. Definitely not Christy Canyon (fer gossake, not even close!) I think this is a pre-nose job Viviana. 4. Aja 5. Sandra Scream 6. Maybe her mother could recognize her from this little slice of face, whaddaya want, miracles? 7 & 8 have been correctly ID'd as Kascha and Nici Sterling. JP

Melissa, thank you for clarifying. Ramsey, I don't know the answer to that; I didn't SAY it was on an Anabolic set, I only said that Chico was an Anabolic director. I have no idea if he is exclusively an Anabolic director or not. And I don't think it matters, that's not really the point, especially if, as Melissa says, he wasn't really drunk. It could well be that this is just typical porn chest-puffing and, if you will, marketing. If it is marketing, I'll stand by my implication that under the circumstances, it's in questionable taste; and if it's true, I'll stand by the idea that it's questionable behavior, period. JP

Does anyone else find it at least distasteful that when there are reports of an HIV-positive test for a transsexual perfomer contracted on an Anabolic set all over the Web that an Anabolic director is here, talking about filming double-anal scenes while drunk? How drunk? We know that he was sober enough to be able to count up to two; was he sober enough to insure that his performers' tests were valid and up to date? And why is he shooting in the first place? That's always been Chris's problem - one of the smartest guys in the business, but surrounds himself with idiots. JP
  • What is gonzo? 4/30/2004 3:48 PM
When the precise definition of gonzo porn is endlessly argued yet again, I like to remind people that it was Mark Kernes of AVN, who, in tribute to Hunter S. Thompson, the original gonzo journalist, coined the term in reference to porn. BTW, if you want a reason to kill yourself, go ask Jim Holliday what a double penetration is and isn't.
  • State May Require Condoms in Porn 4/30/2004 3:44 PM
Many, many great posts. Let me address mainly some of the points that Tony C. has made - thank Galt there's someone with some basic understanding of statistics here, and the industry desperately needs one, too. The best demonstration of this is how Sharon Mitchell defines success. Anyway, the statistics on risk of contracting HIV from unprotected sex, both with positive and negative partners, have been calculated time and time again. Of course, they depend on various initial assumptions, and those can be argued ad infinitum. When I have made calculations myself, I have come with anything from a 3% chance over a ten-year career to as high as 12%, depending on the assumptions. In short, Tony C's numbers are as good as anyone else's. But, as...
  • I Am Again Confused By AIM Policy 4/30/2004 3:07 PM
To respond to fjackyx: Look, pal, these things are NOT all-or-nothing. You can support and criticize AIM, just as I support and criticize my former employer AVN (and one of the things I criticize them for is unquestioning support for AIM), you can enjoy Michael Jackson's music while also thinking that he is a dangerous psychotic child raper who should be behind bars for the rest of his life. It is possible for most of us to hold more than one idea in our heads simultaneously. The concept of AIM is great, the disclosure models and protocols are great, and Sharon Mitchell has proven that she cannot follow them properly. The concept is good, the execution leaves a LOT to be desired. Let us emphasize yet again that the PRIMARY cause of this cr...
  • Are Porn Stars Really Independent Contractors? 4/30/2004 2:55 PM
I think I have mentioned here before that since leaving AVN, one of the professions I have followed is that of a consultant on pension plans. When employers need to determine whether or not a worker is an employee or an independent contractor in order to determine whether contributions on their behalf must be made to the qualified pension plan, they apply the "independent contractor test", which is exactly the twelve points Selena outlined in her post, plus a few more (for example, does the worker publicly hold out or offer his services to the general public or to competing companies? If you advertise your availability as a porn performer, or if you are available to be hired through a registered agent, that rates a "yes"...
  • Time To Shut Down AIM and Sharon Mitchell 4/30/2004 2:26 PM
I think, to some extent, everyone misses the point about AIM as far as a monopoly is concerned. AIM isn't intended to be a monopoly because AIM or AVN are power-mad, or because it' so incredibly lucrative - shooting amateur porn is probably more lucrative than running AIM. AIM is supposed to be a monopoly so that there is one central repository for all the relevant testing and results, to make it easier to identify, recontact, and retest performers in the case of a reported positive test. As has been noted, AIM clients sign a release which PERMITS disclosure of their test results and HIV status to third parties, something doctors and licensed medical clinics are not legally permitted to do otherwise. On its face, this is not a bad model. Ob...
  • What do you want to ask a Porn Studio Owner? 4/27/2004 6:02 PM
Why would a producer ever urge a performer to get breast implants? And, considering the number of performers who get them, why do 90% of porn sex encounters totally ignore the breasts? If they're important enough to inflate, why aren't they important enough to fondle or suck? It used to be that if you were a breast man, some would suggest you were a little juvenile in your sexuality. But the way almost all porn scenes are "stick it in a hole as fast as you can" now seems to me to be the height of juvenility. Even in productions with a story line, the personal interactions of the performers seems minimal. JP
  • Luke Ford 4/25/2004 2:59 PM
As I noted at the start of this string, the original post in the thread that was locked did not assert any conclusion about the legality of Ford's actions. Shylock's and Mr. Patel's posts have fairly well summed up the legal arguments on both sides of the issue. But, as a former journalist, let me point out that Ford's tactics and practices are destructive of First Amendment rights. No source is safe with Ford; countless times he has revealed information clearly intended to be kept secret, from the identity of sources, to the real names of performers, producers, directors, and, in my case, a journalist writing under a pseudonym. He uses his position to conduct personal vendettas. He used his former site to conduct extended diatribes that al...

astroknight wrote: [The little I understand about it makes the idea of unions accepting it seem laughable. Unions manage their own health plans, and charge extremely heavily for it. It's a huge moneymaker for them, so why would they give the workers an option that would at best work the same for the worker while at the same time causing them to lose major income???? I don't mean to waste people's time disagreeing with someone who is basically agreeing with me, but astro doesn't have the right info or reasons here. Unions, strictly speaking, don't "manage" their own health plans; they don't "charge extremely heavily for it" at all - the employee's cost - if any - for what is typically a Rolls-Royce of health plans under ...

I still think this is pie-in-the-sky, but as far as the general principle that performers should get better treatment, better protection, and the like, of course I have no argument. But one of you has said in regard to how this should be funded - not an unimportant issue, because in the immortal words of Robert A. Heinlein, if a question begins with the words "Why don't they..." the answer is always "MONEY" - that, among other things, the review companies should pay, the companies that sell (I presume this refers to wholesale distributors and retailers) should pay, AVN should pay. Despite the fact that the things we're talking about cost money and therefore someone has to pay, I honeslty do not see why these groups sho...

Despite the fact that laws have allowed for HRA accounts and similar vehicles for nearly seven years, they are virtually nonexistent. There are fewer than three hundred HSA's, for example, in the entire country. It is sheer fantasy to suppose that the adult industry is going to do something that even heavily-unionized industries' employers are not doing. Besides, DUHHHH, the performers are NOT employees, so they don't qualify for these tax-qualified benefits! If you would like to go broke VERY quickly, I invite you to invest in a PEO dedicated to the adult industry. BTW, I'm also a professional benefits consultant, aside from being an adult industry expert, so I know what I'm talking about in this connection, too. JP P.S. Why would th...
  • eXXXagerated porn stats 4/23/2004 6:14 PM
As former Business Editor of AVN and author of some pretty serious research on the business of the porn biz, I can tell you a few things: 1) The AVN sales and rental charts are not accurate, not reliable, and have no consistent methodology and no statistical validation. They are NOT, however, pure fiction. They are an honest effort. There WON'T ever be an accurate adult sales or rental chart until the entire industry agrees to the expense of a tracking system, which they will never do. 2) The annual AVN charts that serve as the source for most news stories that cite the number of releases, the dollar size of the business, and other statistics about porn are in the same boat, EXCEPT for the number of new releases. That is a reasonably accu...

Hi folks, I'm new here. My nom de porn is Jack Point. I am the former CFO and Business Editor of AVN. I also wrote reviews for a number of years for AVN under the name Rich C. Leather. I'd like to think I could make some worthwhile contributions to these forums. But a knee-jerk defense of Luke Ford is hardly an auspicious augury of a free forum. While a source for the story was not specifically cited, the fact that Ford taped a conversation involving someone from AVN and resigned because that story was removed by the owner of his website on request of AVN is public knowledge. The story is on AVN.com, and Ford, in his last broadside, commented further on adultbeat.com. Before labeling a recounting of facts and interpretations of facts as a p...
