  Keep in mind that Freescale (the former semiconductor division of Motorola) sells large numbers of PowerPC chips in the embedded market - far more than what they sell through Apple's computers. This has actually been true for a few years now - that's why they didn't bother trying to develop their 8500 series processors into desktop chips (which were the original G5's, planned for use in 2001), it was much more lucrative to build them as embedded procs for network controllers and such. Same thing with their newer MPC8641D chip - it has two G4e cores (labeled as 'e600') with a clock speed of >1.5 GHz, two on-die DDR2-667 memory controllers, four on-die Gigabit ethernet adapters, and two on-die PCI Express 8x controllers - all with an averag...

  I've been following the talk about this over in the forums on arstechnica.com, which has a large percentage of Mac users (~30% last time they did a poll), and in the hundreds of posts to their message board about it, I've seen a few interesting scraps of info. The single most important was that IBM apparantly makes no money from selling PPC970's to Apple... they break even, but that's it. Apparantly Steve tried negotiating a lower price from IBM for them, and trying to get a low-power mobile version as well, but IBM wasn't interested; Apple makes up such a small portion of IBM Microelectronic's business - especially now that IBM has the CPU's for all of the next gen game console - that it wasn't worth spending the money for the small volum...

  An image map? (does a quick View Source) Ah, I see what you mean now. I guess that's one way to make sure the site's appearance is consistent in every browser, but man is that a lot of extra work... totally different than the hand edited HTML I do for my simple little site. At least there's no flash animations or similar silliness, that's a definite plus!

  Interesting, isn't it? For a Linux company, $100 MM is a huge chunk of change, even one like Red Hat. Given that the majority of Dell's server hardware is sold with Linux installed on it instead of Windows, with the distro very often being Red Hat, I'm not surprised that investment firm handling Micheal Dell's account made this investment.
