  I have a neighbor who is a registered sex offender. In the 6 years I've lived here, there have been several petitions passed around the neighborhood warning that he is a threat to teen-aged girls in the area and attempting to force him out. There are also people who find it abhorrent that he is allowed to live in a home with three daughters, aged 7, 9 and 12. However, there is a back story: At age 18 and a senior in HS, he was prosecuted for having sex with his 16-y/o girlfriend, a junior in that same HS -- a relationship of which her parents most definitely did not approve.   An Intel quad-core processor is definitely worth the expense, especially considering how little the Q6600 costs. Personally, I think that SLI (nVidia) and/or CrossFire (ATI) dual, triple or quad video cards are a stupid waste of resources for negligible gain; however, I'm not a gamer, much less a rabid one. ~ GaySatyr ( <link> )

  There really isn't much to cooling motherboards and chips: buy a board with heat pipes, buy a cpu heat sink with heat pipes, and buy fans. Water's out and ion cooling (and other exotic technologies) are just not practical. ~ GaySatyr ( <link> )

  I didn't do the OC'ing or benchmarking -- he did. I assembled the h/w and installed o/s & apps and shipped it to him (he's in MD). The machine has a Thermalright 120 Extreme heat sink with a Scythe fan. PS is a PCP&C Silencer 750 (serious overkill, but he plans to add an additional internal storage array later). HDs are all WD -- a 320 and a pair of 750s in RAID-1. Video is a fanless HIS/ATI 260 hex T/512 (he's photoshopping, not gaming).   I just helped a friend build a new machine about a month ago. He's OC'ing an air-cooled 2.66GHz C2D E6750 on a Gigabyte P35-DS3P motherboard at 3.33GHz and running DDR2 1066 memory at DDR2 1200 (a 25% increase for both components). The machine has been running stably, 24/7, for about three and a half weeks now. Plus, there are only 4 fans in the entire system -- all of them low-noise types. ~ GaySatyr ( <link> )

  jayo, the difference between EF lenses and EF-S lenses is not one of quality; nor is it application to film versus digital sensor. rather, it is a matter of coverage: the EF-S lenses simply do not form an image at the film/sensor plane large enough to cover the entire film area; whereas the EF lenses form an image which does cover the entire film area, of which the digital sensor area is a subset (the crop factor). Most Canon lenses are suitable for both digital and film, the exception being that most Canon wide-angle primes (single-focal length lenses) and wide-angle zooms designed prior to 2001 perform relatively poorly on digital sensor bodies.   jrv's generally right: RAID systems were developed to provide data rapidly and reliably. They weren't conceived as backup systems. And certainly, neither RAID-5 nor RAID-6 should ever be considered as reasonable substitutes for a backup regimen, even with their ability to rebuild a failed drive automatically. However, because RAID-1 leaves your data unchanged on a single drive pair RAID-1 array, it can be used as an ad hock backup system -- especially these days when hard drive costs are significantly less expensive than traditional media backup systems that have any hope of storing the sheer volume of data.Simply mount one drive of the RAID-1 pair permanently inside the computer and the other drive in a removable drive rack or cage accessi...

  Theoretically, RAID-0 gives you lots of speed increases; however, effectively, the only real increase is in sustained reads. Considering that if either drive fails, the entire array is lost and must be rebuilt from the ground up (or restored onto a new RAID-0 pair), I just don't bother. To get &quot;real&quot; speed increases from RAID-0, you need a dedicated controller and 3 physical drives, minimum. It's just not worth the expense or the risk. If you want to put together a machine optimized for speed, 4 physical drives is still the ideal number; however, the arrangement is not what you'd expect and the 4th drive might best be a dedicated RAM drive.   It's AMD/ATI's <link> -- a graphics co-processing engine designed for things like weather prediction and near-earth-collision orbit tracking -- it provides, among other things, 500 Gigaflops of double-precision floating-point computational power in a single, double-wide (because of cooling) with 2GB GDDR3 memory. Multiple units can be ganged in the same computer (if your chipset can support them - requires PCIe/16 v2.0 for every card). All for only $2K per unit.
