Seriously, hardware vs. software really depends on your skill level and what you want to do on the Internet. If you plan on doing stuff that's likely to require allowing access to your computer, eg Internet gaming, then go with hardware. If you're computer savvy and avoid doing stuff that might allow bad stuff in through legit ports then ZoneAlarm is fine. Is NAT going to defend against a surreptitious program(s) residing on your machine establishing an outgoing TCP or UDP connection? BTW, best have Java disabled, nuff said other than I don't lose sleep over WEP/WPA vulnerabilities

From PC Mech newsletter dated 2 Dec 05: "There's some discomforting news for Sygate and Kerio Firewall users this week. Apparently, Kerio has announced it will be discontinuing its free firewall on December 31st. This after Sygate (now owned by Symantec ) said they would be discontinuing their firewalls (both free and pro) on November 30th...this past Wednesday. Now that the plug has been pulled on two major free firewalls, what's left? Well, if you're a fan of either Kerio or Sygate, I'd advise grabbing their free downloads ASAP. You should still be able to use them...they just will no longer be officially supported...
- Disable Flash generated pop-ups in FF 12/1/2005 9:39:02 PM 1on1Fan wrote: Firefox 1.5 has Improved popup blocking <link> So you don't need to do that. I did check it and default 1.5 profile has "privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins" key at about:config and Value is "2". So you don't need to do anything. ps: i know, your post was posted day or 2 days before Firefox 1.5 was released. Edited by - 1on1Fan on 12/1/2005 9:01:49 AM I know of six users who recently upgraded, and all have experienced bukoo crashes so I'm inclined to believe Jamesn's past comments that the geeks who code FF haven't gotten their shi'it figured out
- Fire walls x*%#@ 11/28/2005 9:16:47 PM IMHO, all Symantec s/w especially their firewall, are resource hogs. I've used Sygate's free personal firewall for over three years, and it has alerted me (i.e., unauthorized, outgoing TCP or UDP connection being established) when my system was infected with a Trojan. FWIW, I've known several people who were hacked through unsecure UDP ports, which are the same ports utlizied for a lot of the online gaming http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm
