  Thanks, ninja1, but I do have DownThemAll and it doesn't do exactly what I want. The missing detail is that the sites won't let me queue and have the download manager purely do the files in order. It's like the download links are only good for a short period of time. So as soon as I click save, it would be nice to have the new file start downloading, albeit slowly, so its place in the download process is saved. bsl69dp

  AT&T uverse with 2wire 3801 HGV router. Symptoms: - Dropped internet connection, sometimes the computer would reconnect automatically, other times the computer would not see a network to reconnect to. Then I would have to restart the PC. - Apple products seemed to be less susceptible to the problem. - Dropping seemed very infrequent until I watched closely and saw it fairly regularly (multiple times per hour). - Failed downloads was the symptom that triggered me to observe it closely and solve it. It was almost impossible to download large files (and not just porn vids, any file that took more than a couple minutes to download had problems). I tried every fix I could find - clearing TCP/IP stack, turning off IPv6, looking for updated driv...

  I'm 99.9% sure this is a wireless router problem based on: - the sporadic nature, and - some other poor internet behavior on the wireless machines as compared to the one with a wired connection, and - complaints on public forums about this particular router provided by at&t, and - the exhaustion of other troubleshooting options. Like many things it wasn't really noticeable until it got bad enough. I took a shot and bought a new one and if nothing else, the whole network works much better. Web surfing, streaming, and computer-to-computer transfers are all better. After a couple days of experiments I should know for sure.

  I would have but there's no wired connection on this machine. I will try another machine that does have a wired connection, though. I'm thinking it's a Windows 8.1 issue that others are having. There are still a few more things to try, and I'm starting to get some more clues. The machine seems to lose association with the network regularly now, whereas that symptom wasn't evident before. So, I'm going to try to get to the root cause of that under the assumption that it's directly related.

  Hmmm, no luck but at least I caught it this time. I think the WiFi is the problem as it lost connection and caused 3 out of 5 to fail before I reconnected. Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas of improving WiFi reliability? This is a practically new computer (Dell XPS 9530) and an AT&T 2wire modem/router.

  Forcing the wireless driver to operate in b/g, which is the same as my router, might have cured it. Last night I got a 1.8 GB file from Jules Jordan. I'll test today to see if I can download several without hiccups.

It can automagically recover from broken/interrupted downloads and resume them without having to start over ... DownThemAll is the one I have used for 5+ years. [/quote] Yeah, files that would have been unheard of at one time seem like nothing to me anymore. 4TB HDDs are under $200 so why not see my favorite stars in 1080p? Good advice on DownThemAll, I'll have to try that. I tried forcing my wireless driver to run in b/g mode. Maybe the problem is fixed? I guess I'll find out soon.

  I thought of that but I think I have the power settings so that it won't happen, and I have seen them fail while I'm using the computer actively. I'm looking into if it's an issue between my b/g router and the ac card in my computer but I'm not sure how to identify if that's actually a factor.

  If you're into home theater technology: The best way to protect your DVDs is to only use them as a backup. I have a huge stack of DVDs - the discs without cases would be a couple feet high - but I copied all of them to my computer. Computer is connected to an LCD big-screen. Copy the DVD image to the PC, and if you have it configured properly, you can double-click it and it plays just like you inserted the physical DVD. Granted this is a hobby in itself - time and money of course. If you're not into home theater technology: I say ditch the plastic DVD cases. Even good ones have a tendency to scratch the discs upon insert or removal. Get some soft case binders from CaseLogic and be done with it. You won't have the cover art, but you will sti...
