  Well Gonzo, you should return those discs. If necessary, bring one or two of your players along. Even if the shop get the discs to play on their player, they should not refuse your return. If the DVDs in question starts normally but consistently freeze, stutter or scramble (random rectangles) at a certain point than neither cheap nor expensive players will solve your problem. I don't believe expensive players have any better optics or laser. AFAIK, pretty much every player in the world contain the same optics made by a handful of OEMs. The brand name manufacturers have stricter QA so it's less likely you will get a duh from a brand name. There are many desirable features on expensive players, but I don't think reading marginal discs is on...

  If your story is true (that you have not use your disc more than a few times), than it's beyond the usual "DVD cases suck" situation. It's a textbook case of faulty manufacturing. In a better world, you should get a replacement disc from the studio/distributor, but alas, I don't know if Vivid would give you the time of day. What it means for me, and for the smart consumers, is to realize that when you buy a DVD, you aren't exactly buying a film (with the right to watch it an infinite number of times and for all pectuity). You are buying a phyiscal object that can and will break. And when it breaks, you aren't entitled to a replacement. DVDs are better than VHS tapes in terms of durability, but the deal is the same.   Follow-up on my story... Turns out the seller is a nice guy and promise to refund my money when I ship it back. So I'm down only the shipping fee. Considering no one likes to see discs destroyed, I'm happy with the outcome. That means: I won't be trying the Krazy Glue idea. Geez.. I'm almost dying to try it out... but... nah I will just be more dilligent with making back-ups (yeah I know I should not be discussing how to do it). Yeah Baby!

  It's most likely not your fault? It's an arguement to take the trouble to back up your favorite DVDs.

  I am no expert on DVD players. But my experience surprised even myself. Having brought and used various mid-to-low-end players from the early days of DVD (from Hong Kong, Canada, Europe and USA), my best experience is with a no name Chinese player called Vsonic. After 3 years of use it's still going strong. I took it across the Atlantic and back. It plays NTSC/PAL prefab VCD/DVDs from all regions and to either NTSC, PAL or VGA monitor. It plays DVD+/-R and RW fine (except un-closed discs, of course). It works on 110/220V, 50/60Hz. I've not yet come across a disc that would play on some other player but not this one. Progessive scan (not tested), component output (looks beautiful!), optical 5.1 output (sounds great). And most importantl...

  I just got a DVD off of eBay and the disc arrived cracked from the centre. Dammit! It's not TOO badly cracked, so hopefully it will play. But if I don't do something I think the cracks will grow and eventually destroy the disc. I am considering using cyanoacrylate (Krazy Glue) or hobby glue (mainly a plastic solvent). Good idea? Bad idea? RANT: why do the distributors use these horrible DVD-chewing cases? I've had several discs cracked or damaged by those stupid "hub" in the case. I think it's a conspiracy by the industry (both porn and mainstream) to limit the life time of their products so the consumers have to replace the damaged discs sooner or later.
