  Two watchable recent viewings: Mascara (1983) I don't know how I managed to miss this movie before, as I have always been a big admirer of Lisa De Leeuw. Both Lisa and Lee Caroll are wonderful and very convincing in this film. De Leeuw, while sexually active (indeed, eager), is troubled by her unfulfilled fantasies. She solicits hooker Caroll to help her achieve them. The relationship that develops between the two women is the heart of the movie. The story is okay and the sex generally good but the strength is how richly the two leads develop their characters, especially Lee. Very fine performances.   Well, I've again gone a long while without contributing some of my recent reads. Here goes: Jane Austen: Her Life by Park Honan What can I say, I'm a Jane fanboy. This was a decent bio with commentary on the novels. And while I was reading this, I was also reading: Mansfield Park by Jane Austen The only one of her major works that I hadn't read. Enjoyable but probably my least favorite. Nothing wrong, but the main character, Fanny Price, is such a shrinking violet. With such wonderful Austen leading ladies as Elizabeth Bennett, Elinor Dashwood, or Emma Woodhouse, it was tiring putting up with the completely self-effacing Fanny.   ^ Barbarians is a marvelous book, albeit a brutal and painful read. It surprises me how few people I know (including avid readers) who are familiar with Coetzee.

Umm, I really shouldn't nitpick, then, but since I consider Georgina Spelvin to be one of the (if not THE) greatest performers ever, I couldn't help but notice that the picture you use to illustrate her isn't the wonderful Georgina. Sorry!

  Of course you get to make the rules! Thanks for doing the research. By the way, you got the wrong Jennifer Jordan -- your link referred to a performer from the early 2000s. I had in mind a star who started in 1974: <link> She was perhaps not the most glamorous star, but she exuded sexuality. I would recommend Angela the Fireworks Woman as a good example of her work.   ^ I quite agree about Midnight Desires. It's an oddball little movie that I am very fond of (and with a very pleasing cast). Not too long ago I rewatched it on the poor print I have, lamenting its quality, and welcome this new offering.

Anyway, I thought I would mention a very modest little film from long ago: Night After Night (1976) This is far from notable. It is short, clocking in at just under an hour. The sex scenes are largely a jumbled mash up of brief quick clips, used over and over, giving a jerky, fragmented feel. No notable new ground is broken. But, it does succeed at something seldom done well in porn: it is funny. Not as in great lines and funny jokes, but in humorous situations and amusing characters.   I recently went back to the great films of Henry Paris (Randy Metzger) for the first time in many years. They remain some of the finest (and funniest) adult films ever. The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann and The Opening of Misty Beethoven retain their charm and are high up on my all-time list. I'm not sure if I ever saw Naked Came the Stranger before, but it is very witty and on the same plane as Pamela Mann and Misty Beethoven; it shows Darby Lloyd Rains at her very best. Barbara Broadcast maybe didn't hold up quite as well as I remember it, but still has a great deal of frothy charm. On the other hand, Maraschino Cherry appealed to me more than it did ages ago.
