- Andrew Blake DVDs by Caballero 11/25/2003 2:07 AM It's a shame that Caballero's gone so far downhill. Back in the VHS days their tapes were much better quality than other porn companies- theirs had Hi-Fi soundtracks when several others' didn't! They had a lot of laserdiscs out too (distributed by Image). Their DVDs just plain suck though! Anyone know what happened?
- Why are porn DVD's so expensive? 10/26/2002 1:37 PM I usually laugh at any discussion of DVDs being priced too high, having been a laserdisc consumer prior to DVD and having most of those priced at an average of $40! Regular movies on laserdisc were usually at least $35, and porn LDs (what little there were) sold for $50-60! I have noticed that the prices in "Adult" stores (places that sell nothing but porn-related stuff) are ridiculous- last time I went to one I saw some DVDs priced at $40 that I had gotten for $7 at Fry's! So I'll continue to stay away from those places, as fun as it is to laugh at all the dirty old men in there looking at the magazines :)
- Videoage - 4 movies on 1 dvd? 10/20/2002 7:12 PM I have a few of these, all I can say is that they're cheap. Many of them look like they were taken straight off of VHS tapes, and some have very obvious edit points where they cut out parts for time Strangely, these also have uncompressed PCM soundtracks. One disc I really wanted, with 2 John Holmes movies and 2 Best of Seka volumes, has video noise on the bottom of the screen, like they forgot to adjust the tracking! The sound on the John Holmes movies only comes out of the left channel and has a constant buzzing as well! Sadly nobody else puts these titles out that I know of, I'd love to see these unedited from the original masters or at least something that looks better than this! They have another classic movie 4-pack out now with "...
- Has anyone seen adult movies for sale at Fry's ? 10/20/2002 7:02 PM A few times they got in shipments of NuTech DVDs for $6.99 each! I loaded up on them each time, but they haven't gotten in any more in a long time. They carry a lot of VCA titles but they're all overpriced ($34.99, Tower sells them for $24.99).
- VIVID's Multiple Angles whining redux 9/1/2001 4:29 AM I only have one Vivid DVD, but you can get rid of the icon on it by tapping the reverse-scan button- I don't know why they had one subtitle stream encoded yet even when it's off the damn thing still comes onscreen.
- Where are adult dvds made? 8/18/2001 8:16 AM The quality of DVDs in general depends more on the disc authoring than the pressing. Laserdiscs are analog so picture quality varies depending on the pressing, but Sony-manufactured DVDs from Sony Pictures generally look great while smaller-studio titles pressed at Sony's DVD plant can look terrible. I think Pioneer USA now makes DVDs, but haven't been able to figure out what their markings look like.
- Where are adult dvds made? 8/14/2001 6:22 PM Yep, good old Di$ney- when they got on board with Image Entertainment to have them distribute their laserdiscs (they were with Pioneer before) one of their requirements was for Image to discontinue their adult titles, which led to LaserDisc Entertainment coming in as a strictly adult-laserdisc distributor- what's funny is their packaging still looked a lot like Image's, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were still the same company. Some of the older stuff still had Image's logo on the covers and on the disc intros but had the new logo on the disc labels. BTW- if you have ANY Image laserdisc with the old intro with the discs flying over Hollywood, freeze the picture and you can see that all the flying discs are labeled "Debbie Does Dal...
- What if Madacy made porn DVDs? 8/14/2001 7:56 AM I have one that answers this question: "John Holmes: The King of X" from Taboo Entertainment. It's a somewhat random compilation of scenes with John Holmes, all looking like they were taken from VHS. The whole thing plays like someone was just going through a stack of VHS tapes and saying "OK, I'll put this one on next!" There are noticable glitches between every scene and lots of tape drop-out visible. The strange thing is I've been watching this a lot just because I'm simply AMAZED at how awful the quality is! The material itself is great- I wish the movies they were taken from were available on DVD in their complete form, but the quality of the DVD itself is unbelievably bad that if this sort of stuff amuses you it's ...
- Was that REALLY Paul Thomas in J.Christ Superstar? 8/14/2001 7:49 AM I watched the 1973 movie of the musical play "Jesus Christ Superstar" on DVD and the guy who played Peter looked a lot like Paul Thomas- in the credits he's listed as Philip Tobias. IMDB.com says that this is in fact him- I know there's people on this board who know the business pretty well, so I gotta know if that was really him or not, and has he been in anything else outside of porn?
- Where are adult dvds made? 8/14/2001 7:17 AM On one-sided discs you can always look at what's stamped on the inner edge of the playing side to tell where it was made. Most of NuTech's discs are made somewhere in Taiwan. The ones I have from other labels are made in the U.S. but the manufacturers aren't recognizable- Warner (WAMO), Sony DADC and Panasonic make most of the mainstream titles and I've never seen an adult title pressed at any of these companies- closest is the Penthouse videos from Image which are pressed at Warner. My DVD of "Faces of Death" was pressed at Sony too, which I thought was kinda funny. All the porn laserdiscs I have look like they were made at Pioneer USA- they were probably the only ones willing to do it since they couldn't be pressed anywhere in J...
- Something Weird Video DVDs? 7/20/2001 12:04 PM I bought 2 of their Drive-in Double Feature discs and they were great; they've got tons of drive-in theater intermission trailers. I picked up 2 newer ones though and they had a goddamned "SWV" logo onscreen during ALL the trailers! It wasn't on the movies, but I've heard some of their VHS tapes do, so I will NEVER buy anything else from them again.
- A list of Golden Age Classics on DVD 7/20/2001 11:59 AM Is "Centerspread Girls" in stereo? This actually did have a Dolby Stereo soundtrack, though I don't know how many theaters that played it had the equipment for it. I did see a VHS of it marked "Stereo" a long time ago but never got around to renting it. I've heard Caballero's DVDs are pretty bad quality, with pausing in between scenes- true? That's bad considering they were one of the only porn companies doing good-quality VHS tapes; other companies didn't have Hi-Fi soundtracks on them but theirs always did! I have a copy of "Stiff Competition" (1984) on VHS which is in stereo, and I have "I Like To Watch" (1982) on laserdisc but it's in mono, even though it says "Dolby Stereo" in the credi...
- Looking for a surround sound adult DVD 7/20/2001 11:46 AM NuTech has a bunch of DVDs with DTS and Dolby 5.1, but the surround is mostly just used for music. The 'dialogue' (if you wanna call it that) sort of echoes in the left and right channels, I was sort of hoping it would be kept only in the center channel so I could disconnect the speaker and get to hear the music by itself (Are they ever gonna do a porn DVD with an isolated music track?) "Sensual Experience" has a few 'supernatural' surround effects related to the plot but nothing great during the sex scenes, plus the music is boring George Winston-wannabe stuff. "Pandora Peaks: A Peek of Pandora" has some great music though.
- NuTech "Multiple Angles" 4/30/2001 10:48 AM I agree the multi-angle thing is a joke, but otherwise these are great discs. I've got Easy and Nothing to Hide which both have Jim Holliday commentary tracks, "Easy" even has a Spanish dubbed track, and even the sex scenes are dubbed with the Spanish voices ("Ah, si! Me gusta!") I've also got Inside Candy Samples and Sorority Pink which were shot on video (I like the theatrical films better) which have the phony multi-angles but nothing from Jim Holliday though the covers say they do. If only Criterion would put out some classic porno movies! :)
- A Couple of Questions About DVD Mastering... 11/15/2000 11:55 PM DVDs are not required to have time encoding. It's good to have, but it isn't required- some regular studios will have it only during the movie itself, any trailers or other material on the disc will just display "PLAY" on Pioneer players. Artifacting is the biggest problem with smaller-operation DVDs. I've seen a few porn discs that look pretty bad (dancing pixels on the wall). This doesn't happen on all discs, but was one of the reasons I was a bit apprehensive about the format coming out. There's definitely a LOT more porn on DVD than there ever was on laserdisc, and at much lower prices too! Porn laserdiscs listed for $59.99, I bought a bunch of clearance ones at Tower for the unheard-of low price of $24.99 each! With that in m...
- PORN v.s. REAL LIFE 11/15/2000 11:48 PM It's definitely a lot harder to find someone to have sex with in the real world! In 'porn world' you can just go up to someone and say "wanna fuck?" You'd get slapped in the face if you really did that!
- DVD title most in need of remastering... 11/15/2000 11:41 PM The laserdisc of "Latex" had a commentary track with director Michael Ninn, which I didn't see mentioned anywhere on the DVD cover so it probably doesn't have it. My copy of "Only the Best 2" from NuTech has the wrong sound during one scene- it plays the sound from the last scene on the disc during the second scene! Too bad about those VCX titles, I will stay away from them. Didn't know they were still in business so I was surprised to see DVDs with covers like their old tapes had. We need more classic porn on DVD! BTW how many DVDs of "Debbie Does Dallas" are there? I have the NuTech one and it's not that great; I rented the laserdisc a long time ago and it looked better. I see VCX has a DVD of this too.
