  Republicans have always tried to pull this crap. In addition, they always root for a low voter turnout because high voter turnout almost always favors the Democrats. They want to limit who votes; they hope not too many people vote. It strikes me that the Rs are, in all this, anti-(small "d")democratic.

  Interesting article in the NYT Friday. In thinking about this I find myself just a little less likely to get holier-than-thou and throw big stones at Paterno and the others who failed to report. They still committed moral and ethical lapses. But there is something more fundamental operating here than just a football program circling the wagons. We all say, "Of course I would interevene. Of course I would report wrongdoing (of whatever nature) to authorities." But, in fact, the evidence is substantial that we wouldn't.   I agree with everything BSD wrote. Some people have said that Paterno didn't know all the details and McQueary story was vague. Doesn't matter. If you hear one of your coaches and friends of 30 years is abusing children, you ask questions. Unlike what he said to the Grand Jury, I suspect McQueary did, in fact, report something vague to Joe like there was something sexual going on in the shower. At least thats what I have to believe at this point in the investigation. As Jman5245 wrote and I wrote earlier: DOESNT MATTER. All Paterno had to do was say, Tell me exactly what you saw. At that point, he would have done something, I have to believe. If, on the other hand, Paterno actuall heard all the details at the time and did just what he did, ...

  PSU alumni have organized a connection with RAINN (Rape Abuse Incest National Network) <link> to encourage donations to prevent child abuse and help the victims of this. I realise this is a small effort, but it is at least something.

  True. But there is now a bill in the General Assembly that makes it a felony not to report sexual abuse of children for certain professionals, positions. It will probably pass overwhelmingly. It is currently a misdemeanor. Edited by - Billy Bathgate on 11/11/2011 10:40:32 PM

  Thanks. This is the saddest I have ever been as an alum. The moral cowardice on display in my university is absolutely appalling. But thank God the Board is at least starting to do the right thing. I hope the Board and the university now, at least, starts to consider what the university can do for the victims of this tragedy.

  I think Spanier has been told by the Trustees to STFU. Gov. Corbett is now in on all the Board of Trustees meetings. I am hopeful he will bring an outside political sensibility and savvy to their decisions so that they can quickly do the right thing. Talk has it that Tom Ridge will be appointed interim President. This would be a good thing.

  I've already said I cancelled my donations. Paterno's partial &quot;defense&quot; seems to be that MacQueary told him there had been a sexual incident. Even if true, it simply doesn't wash. All Paterno had to do was say, &quot;Tell me exactly what you saw.&quot; MacQuieary should be fired immediately and Paterno, as I said, previously, should be told to retire immediately. As for the studenmts demonstrating at Joe PA's house, hey, they're kids. I doubt they represent the feelings of the majority of the 45,000 students on the Main Campus. And my sampling from friends, blogs, emails, etc. suggests to me that the alums take a far, far darker view of all this, including their attitude toward Paterno.

  A person familiar with Sandusky's relationship with Penn State told The Associated Press that the former coach long maintained an office in the East Area Locker building which is across the street from the Penn State football team's building, and was on campus as recently as week ago working out. The university's online directory listed Sandusky, whom Penn State officials said was banned from campus over the weekend -- as an assistant professor emeritus of physical education in the Lasch building. Sandusky was Paterno's longtime defensive coordinator and one-time heir apparent.

  IMHO, not good enough. He really needs to leave now. On another point, CD Sandusky was made persona non-grata at the athletic facility after the incident, I can see that it is possible, that Paterno lost track of it. At least that is what I'm hoping. No he wasnt persona non grata after the incident. He still had an office in the football building even during the past two years EVEN when the administration was aware the state AG was conduction an investigation into him. All he was told after the 2002 incident was not to bring any more children into the building. In other words, go do your child molesting elsewhere. Outrageous.

  For President Spanier to stand there and say he unequivocally supports these two jerks sickens me. I just signed the <link> And I just called the Office of Annnual Giving and canceled my monthly donation. They ought to fire Paterno too. Sure, he notified the authorities as soon as he was told something. But that's all he did. There's a big difference between doing what is legally required and what is morally right.
