Review brief: Distribpix have gone all out with the Blu-ray release of The Opening of Misty Beethoven providing the best quality version of this film seen yet on home video and a wealth of extras that delve into the film itself. This release is highly recommended for fans of the film, even if they own the previous VCA release, or for any fans of classic adult cinema.

Review brief: Don't be fooled by the fact that this was directed by Radley Metzger, who directed such acknowledged classics as The Opening of Misty Beethoven. This film just doesn't come close to the level of Misty Beethoven, or Metzger's other efforts. The DVD was transfered from an extremely distressed print of the movie. This thing is simply terrible to look at, and there is little eroticism, despite the presence of the superstars of the era, including Leslie Bovee, Gloria Leonard, Constance Money, and Annette Haven. For example, Constance Money's scene consists only of a short handjob. About the only thing that saves this film from being a complete waste is the nasty, kinky S&M scene with C.J. Lang.

Review brief: What do you get when you mix Metzer, a classic play, two very hot actors, and a relatively big budget? You get the best porno movie ever made. Unfortunately, that's not saying very much since most porn movies are extremely bad and being the best of the worst isn't exactly a very good accomplishment. The largest problem with this movie is that the plot was razor thin and extremely fragmented. The flow of the story was continuously interrupted by needless scenes of blowjobs. (Way too many blowjobs in my opinion. Metzer is way too obsessed with blowjobs. The ratio of blowjobs to vaginal sex was something like 10 to 1.) He also liked to add in ridiculous dialogue to the ends of good scenes. I suppose his intention was to break the tension of sexual arousal with some comedy. (Mainstream movies do this all the time like when they add a comedy bit to an action sequence.) This device did not work for this movie because it ended up coming across as being stupid rather than funny which is funny since the play that this movie is based on is actually funny all the way through.

Review brief: NOTE: This is not your typical review. Others have done an excellent job reviewing the content, scenes, performances, etc. of this porn classic. This "review" concerns itself with how the DVD's contents compare with the complete, uncut original release version of the film or an early (before prior self-censorship) VHS version. The Ratings given refer either to the "original" version of the film (Performers, Plot, Sex, etc.) or to the DVD version (Extras, Value, etc.) and are relatively arbitrary. The important info is that which follows. NAKED (AND EDITED!) CAME THE STRANGER ON DVD VCA has released another of the Henry Paris (Radley Metzger) hardcore classics on DVD, Naked Came the Stranger. They should have retitled it EDITED Came the Stranger and warned everyone ahead of time, because this one is really a hatchet job.

PAMELA MANN DVD EDITS After doing a side-by-side, shot-by-shot comparison of the VCA DVD version of Henry Paris (Radley Metzgers) first hardcore porn classic, The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann, with an old video that appears to have been made from an original release print of the film, it looks like only one major scene, plus a couple of minor recaps including that scene, have been edited and/or shortened for the Pamela Mann DVD. However, the edited scene is a major one, as will be detailed later.

After side-by-side, shot-by-shot comparison of the new DVD version of the Henry Paris (Radley Metzger) classic with an old video that appears to have been made from an original release print of the film, only two short shots and the end title appear to be missing from the new DVD.

Well, they saved the worst for last and by that, I dont mean from a content standpoint! While Maraschino Cherry is generally regarded as the weakest of that group of films, even Metzgers weakest efforts far outstrip those of most of his porn peers and successors, IM (and many others) HO.

Review brief: Maraschino Cherry is the final hardcore film directed by Radley Metzger (under his Henry Paris pseudonym) and, as such, is likely to be of considerable interest to porn and cult movie fans alike. However, those expecting something akin to The Opening Of Misty Beethoven are going to be disappointed. Maraschino Cherry, perhaps predictably given its place in the Metzger/Paris filmography, is actually little more than a vignette movie (or, as it would probably have been described at the time, a loop carrier). The movie revolves around Gloria Leonard, mistress of a New York brothel, discussing her business activities with her wide-eyed sister. Around this simple structure sit a variety of erotic encounters ranging from the strictly vanilla to some decidedly edgy dungeon sequences that bring to mind the Women In Prison movies of the period. Like Barbara Broadcast, its predecessor in the Metzger cannon, Maraschino Cherry never really amounts to much despite a few standout moments.

Review brief: Running Time: 77 min. Production Date: 1977 Director: Henry Paris (aka Randy Metzger) Cast: Annette Haven, Sharon Mitchell, Loren Michaels, Constance Money, Suzanne McBain, Camilla Farrell, Sybil Kingmaner, C. J. Laing, Shirley Peters, Helen Wolf, Barbara Woodward, Jamie Gillis, Bobby Astyr, Alan Marlow, and Wade Nichols Initial Expectations: How could I not go into this DVD with high expectations? Initial Reaction: I waited way too long to watch this DVD. Who Should Watch It : Couples, fans of classic porn, and anybody wanting something different from the typical porn of today Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting an overabundance of a plot or nasty sex Audio /Video Quality: Despite Barbara Broadcast being over twenty five years old, the technical aspects are great throughout the feature. It looks and sounds every bit as good as many television shows and movies Ive seen from the same time period on TV. Although it was shot on film, theres very little grain and very few remnants that come across.

Review brief: Length: 84:20 Year: 1975 The Opening Of Misty Beethoven has everything that makes a great film and not just a great porno. It is funny, cute, sweet, and very sexy. In my opinion everything came together perfectly in this film to make it maybe the best porno of all time. This is certainly the best porno I have seen in my admitedly rather limited viewing of the genre. VCA has done a superb job with this dvd they have included a commentary track with the star of the movie Jamie Gillis and supporting actress Gloria Leonard. They both provide interesting tidbits about the film and its making and about the other actors and actresses that took part in the film. The audio quality is excellent. The video quality is pretty good there is a problem with a lightening at the top and bottom of the screen but it is not too distracting, but this is the only problem with the video of note. The story of this film is based on the movie Pygmalion. This movie has been made numerous times. This version of course involves Dr.

Review brief: Director: Henry Paris Writer: Jake Barnes Videographer: Chico Carter Running length: 1 hr. 15 min. D.O.P. 1977 Female cast: Annette Haven, C.J. Laing, Sharon Mitchell, Jennifer, Suzanne McBain, Constance Money, Shirley Peters Male cast Alan Marlow, Wade Nichols, Jamie Gillis, Bobby Astyr, Michael Gaunt Audio/Video: For a 25 year old film, it was surprisingly good. Noticable artifacts and pixelation got worse toward the end, but not bad enough to be distracting. The porn music was laid on with a heavy hand, but I was surprised to hear actual singing in one pleasant tune. Extras: Commentary by Gloria Leonard and Jamie Gillis, Photo gallery, box cover artwork, and an interesting Hall of Fame commentary by Jim Holliday who gives us a rundown on some of the great performers. Condoms: None The Movie: I decided to start checking out some of 'The Classics' in porn to see how they compare. I didn't realize when renting this one just how old it was, but I can't say I was disappointed, really.

Review brief: This was a great flik. It's got stuff in it that one just doesn't see any more in modern day porn. Like dicks cumming and being put back into the vagina. I don't recall any condoms either. The first scene had a lady sitting over a guy's lap and rubbing her labia over an erect penis before inserting it inside her. The way it was done/looked, it was something I hadn't seen before. It was a real turn on. The story was strong. It actually engrossed me. It got me interested in how Misty Beethoven would turn out. It actually felt like a "real movie" at times (something modern porn rarely does for me) where one wants to see the story through to the end. It is a classic and the females have genital hair. I found the females for the most part to be attractive. They had that seventies homely look but they looked good to me. In a way it was exciting to see the gals not looking so "glamorous." All though the sex scenes didn't have the "graphic" nature that I like from modern day stuff there was stuff I'd come back to see again.

Review brief: While BARBARA BROADCAST is a true classic in the annals (or is that "anals?")of adult movies, I must admit that this film has never been, and probably would never will be, a favorite of mine despite this superb DVD presentation by VCA Classics. As it so happens, my ardent interest in porn coincided with a time where videotape reigned supreme, and where any incompetent with a video camera, a flood light, and a hotel room could easily make their own pornographic masterpiece. Suffice to say, I completely missed the era of true blue movie classics of the seventies and early eighties (which included titles like DEEP THROAT, INSATIABLE, ROOMMATES, and BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR) for which porn historians like Jim Holliday sing their praises. Still, though I lack the cultural background to appreciate fully the golden age of adult movies, their overall erotic effect is not lost upon me, nor should it be lost upon anyone who enjoys watching carnally raw, hot sex.

Review brief: Barbara Broadcast is a Radley Metzger classic from 1977, starring Annette Haven and C.J. Laing. For more on Metzger, see my review of "The Opening of Misty Beethoven." The plot, to the extent there is one, involves C.J. Laing as a reporter interviewing Annette Haven, as "Barbara Broadcast", a sort of "Happy Hooker"/Xaviera Hollander type character. This is my least favorite of the Metzger hardcore pieces, but is still an excellent example of golden age adult film making. My favorite scene is a simple oral scene with under-celebrated seventies star Suzanne McBain. There is also the famous kitchen scene in which C.J. Laing does an anal scene with Wade Nichols. Nichols went on to star on a daytime soap opera for about 7 years, later succumbing to AIDS. There is a scene with Constance Money that was an unused leftover from "Misty Beethoven." In accordance with current law, because Constance was securely chained in the scene, no sex is shown, which is a darn shame.

Review brief: This 1976 Golden Age classic is, by critical consensus, the best adult film of all time. It was directed by Henry Paris, a stage name for Radley Metzger, who directed several soft-core movies of the 1960s, including The Dirty Girls (1964), The Alley Cats (1965), Carmen, Baby (1967), Therese and Isabelle (1968), Camille 2000 (1969), and The Lickerish Quartet (1970). Its safe to say he is more famous for this film than for any other; millions more people have seen Misty Beethoven than have seen any of those non- explicit movies. By the way, Im not talking out of school by giving his real name; on the commentary track of this disk, Jamie Gillis and Gloria Leonard use his real name repeatedly. They arent talking out of school either, because some quick Internet research on any number of sites would give you his real name. The plot is an x-rated takeoff on George Bernard Shaws 1916 play Pygmalion which was the basis for Lerner and Loewes successful Broadway musical and Academy Award-winning film, My Fair Lady.
