Review brief: HOTEL ITALIA (87 minutes) Directed by Lucas Kazan International Media Distributors (IMD), 1999 Cast: Dario DAlba, Ettore Tosi, Pietro Cattani, Erik Kovak, Marian, Marco Ramazzotti, Daniele Della Valle, Roberto Volta, Andrea Albani, Titiano Cortese REPORT CARD: A Talk about wander-lust! The gay porn travelogue has certainly come a long way. First it was Bjorn, then Bel Ami, and then, suddenly, everyone was getting into the act--making these lush, postcard-like videos, featuring great locales as well as lots of hot fucking and sucking. Since I didnt know IMD or Lucas Kazan before this film I had only mild expectations--but Im happy to report that Hotel Italia offers both the heat and the beauty youd expect from any of the major players. Its a terrific mix of scenery and solid action. In addition to the great cast of sexy Italian hunks, Kazan offers up a gorgeous portrait of smalltown Italy. Maybe Ive watched The Talented Mr. Ripley too many times, but no porn film has ever made me dream of travel this much...

Review brief: SOMETHING VERY BIG (109 minutes) Directed by: Kevin Clarke Paladin / Odessey Men Video, 1998 Cast: Tony Donovan, Dean OConnor, Tony Cummings, Jason Miller, Jason Nikas, Noah Walker, Cody Matthews, Jonnie Perrino Report Card: C+ This is one of those titles that, with just a little more effort--or attention or talent or something, anyway--couldve been terrific. It features a great cast of pretty young twinks who, though they arent quite Bel-Ami caliber, are damn close. There are at least a couple of good scenes and performances. Unfortunately the guys arent filmed or coached very well, and both the script and direction are a mess. Way-cute Dean OConnor stars as a Midwestern kid, fresh off the bus, who gawks and drools over a gang of Hollywood skateboard punks, led by super-hung Tony Donovan. Almost half the action takes place in and around a public bathroom where the skaters hang out; but most of this glory-hole footage is pointless and incomplete.

Its not my favorite Kristen Bjorn title, but its hard to criticize a movie this good. As usual with KB you get tons of hot uncut men, in steamy sex scenes that are well-choreographed and gorgeously filmed. The cumshots are fast and furiousone every minute or two, it seems likewith each performer shooting multiple loads in each scene. If theres a problem, I guess its in the words well-choreographed. KB films are noted for their quality, but after a while the sex can seem a little too planned, as if everyones doing the assigned in-and-out with very little spontaneous heat.

You simply cant go wrong with any Bjorn titleand his commitment to the DVD format is unique among the major players in gay porn. A true pioneer in every way! In fact, I have this awful tendency to want to call each of his movies "his best ever!" Whats a boy to do? ManWatcher is, however, DEFINITELY in the running. A red-hot recent effort, it well deserved the GayVN awards it won last year for Best Picture, Best Director and others... The general plot: Ferenc, poor boy, is a shy onethe kind of guy whos always been a "watcher" rather than a "doer".

Review brief: FALLEN ANGEL II, 111 minutes Titan Media/Atomic (Distributors) Directed by Robert Kirsch & Bruce Cam Featuring: Kyle Brandon, Mike Roberts, Alex Stone, Jackson Reid, Frank Parker, Josh Perez, Thomas Lloyd, Damon Page, Harold Creg, Tripp Doyle REPORT CARD: C+ The original Fallen Angel was a great video success, winning lots of awards in 1998, and spawning two sequels so far. The DVD edition also turned my head around--making me understand, to some extent, the thrill of authentic leather S&M. I wish I could report that FA2: Descending, as they call it in the opening credits, lives up to the original. But how often does that happen? The film has its moments, but there's little here that will thrill anyone other than die-hard fans of the performers or the sub-genre. Firstly, the entire movie is one long orgy sequence, with no real form or continuity. While the guys are undoubtedly into what they're doing, the action is too similar for too long, too constant and unfocused. There are no real beginnings and endings.

Review brief: AROUSAL, 82 mins. Titan/45 Degrees/Atomic (Distributors) Directors: Bruce Cam & Robert Kirsh Report Card: B+ ?? How do you review an award-winning softcore porn title which consists mostly of re-used footage? In this case, all of Arousal's couples scenes were shot for Titan's gorgeous hardcore Island Guardian and Desert Train, so first I'd recommend those DVDs over this one--for most of us who are actually interested in sexual activity... Titan calls Arousal "a fine art coffee-table book come to life"--and that's a pretty good description. Cam & Kirsch know how to find stunning scenery--human and otherwise--and film it well. Taken on its own merits this DVD is beautiful, well-made and, yes, arousing as hell--if the sight of gorgeous studs passionately kissing and rubbing against each other for 82 minutes sounds worth a purchase or a rental. (Don't confuse this softcore with the kind usually referred to as "cable porn"--which includes real or simulated sex edited non-explicitly.

Review brief: THE URGE Directed by Jim Steel Vivid Studios The Urge stars Devyn Foster and Marco Rossi, two of the hottest muscleboys of the 90s, complete with GQ faces and amazing abs. With a well-known director and studio behind them, I figured the chances were good for something steamy... Well, yes and no. There's plenty of fake steam, in fact. In two scenes. Plus a fake alley, a fake locker room, a fake industrial plant... If you never thought bad set design could ruin a film, take a look here. You want to shoot in the studio rather than on location? Fine! But this movie appears to have been filmed onstage at your Aunt Matilda's small-town community theater. And with a similar budget. In fact, colored stage lights were used rather than movie lights--casting inadvertant red and green shadows across all the performer's bodies. There's not an actual skin-tone in sight. Of course, the set and lights get plenty of competition. It's hard to imagine a lamer script. There's supposed to be a story going on here, but I defy anyone to actually follow it.

Review brief: DESERT TRAIN Directed by Kirsh & Cam Titan Media / Atomic (Distributors) REPORT CARD: B Desert Train features perhaps the most gorgeous photography ever shot in the U.S. for a gay porn film. Stunning camera work, and extremely fine music. The editing is top-notch too, if a bit leisurely. And the cast is outstanding--almost every man here is guaranteed to make you jump to attention, so to speak. Still--it manages to add up to less than it should. Titan's main directors--Bruce Cam and Robert Kirsh--can be an infuriating team. They know just what it takes to make great films, and they rank among the best in gay porn for craftsmanship and artistry. Yet their hard-core footage is often poorly planned, uneven and rushed. The sex scenes vary drastically in length, and the "pretty scenery" begins to feel like padding after a while. In Desert Train, for example, Adriano Marquez--one of my current favorites, featured on the DVD cover--is almost completely wasted in a scene which, according to the production notes, was interrupted while filming.

Review brief: IDOL COUNTRY, 90 minutes directed by Chi Chi LaRue HIS Video REPORT CARD: A- Ryan Idol was one of the biggest superstars of early 90's gay porn. (He's still around today--back in the business and doing well, after some very troubled times.) This hot, and sometimes silly, star vehicle was made during the height of his popularity. If you know and love Ryan, this is a must-have! If not-- it may still be worth your consideration. Great guys, nice scenery and solid action. Six scenes: four duos, a group and a solo... The story? A friend bets Ryan that he can't "last the weekend" with just one guy, tricking him into spending some time on a farm in the midwest. Ryan, of course, not only loves the farm eventually, but falls for the farmer... First up: the buff and beautiful--but wooden--Marco Rossi and his "lover" play around the pool. Fuck-wise, not a bad scene, but a bit lacking in camera-angle variety. Second, the party scene. Ryan gets serviced by (and fucks) a pair of guys, including TJ Sloane, as another pair watch and jack off.

As usual, he includes three or four times as many cumshots as most standard studio releases. The scenery is gorgeous, and the music is--well okay, a little too new-agey for my tastes, but still... Few, if any, other directors produce their porn with such skill and artistic flair. For anyone trying Bjorn's work for the first time, this one is a particularly good introduction. Each of the five scenes takes place in a different corner of the globe, making this a Whitman's Sampler of uncut studs from each of his major talent locations. It's like a greatest hits package, but with all new material! The first scene (San Juan, Puerto Rico) features Adriano Marquez--one of Bjorn's hottest finds, now embarked on a major porn career stateside.

Review brief: Directed by Cam & KirschREPORT CARD: B+First off, if you're looking for the extreme side of S&M, buy the video--not the DVD.Titan Media, like others, is farming their DVD production to an outside company. Thus they've decided to release only what they call "retail" versions on DVD, rather than their own private "mail order" versions. (Is this what Falcon is going to end up doing too? I hope not. But if they out-source their DVD production, you can probably count on it.)These "retail" cuts are hardcore sex, to be sure, but they've been re-edited to remove "controversial" scenes, which in gay porn usually means fisting or extreme buttplay, flogging or piercing. (Perhaps multiple penetration too; I'm not sure.) Since this stuff has only slight novelty value for me personally, I probably found the DVD cut of Fallen Angel at least as exciting as I would the VHS cut. Still... No one wants to fork out $69 (the very high retail price) just to find out they've gotten a censored or edited-down product. An unacceptable practice, in my opinion.

Review brief: REPORT CARD: A- Youch! A Russian soldier returns home, remembering the hot times he and his friends have had in Budapest. Awesome models, solid action, and buckets of cum. Not a dud anywhere in sight. Recommended with no reservations!4 great scenes; including a brief j/o session featuring a pair of twin bodybuilders.First, a burly blonde soldier follows two hunters back to their lodge, and fucks them both twice. This prolonged 3-way couldve used more variety, but the two hunters are drop-dead gorgeous, so whats to complain? Next, an incredible duo between a younger soldier and a well-hung businessman. While guys in suits dont usually do much for me, this guy hit my all-time-list with his first cumshot, before he even took off his clothes... The third scene is a great 6-way orgy, including the narrator, at an underground bar. Thenafter the twins whack off around the spa poolthe narrator and the blonde soldier have a hot duo in the weight room...THE DVD: Let me just say one thing: DIRECT ACCESS RULES! Life will never be the same! Some complaints, however.
