Let it be said that I am a huge anime fan. Adult anime, known to genre fans as "hentai" anime have sort of been a genre I never was interested in. I've seen only one hentai title previous to this. The experience proved to be a trying one. There was rarely any "straight sex" as it were. There were demons, nazis, zombies, all raping young(high school aged) women. I was just turned off to the idea. Then I had read glowing reviews of a title called Urotsukidoji: The Legend of the Overfiend. I heard it was considered the best of the hentai genre. So I became a little interested and a two disc set would be soon available. Then I heard it was created by the man who made the first hentai I had seen. Oh boy, was I in for a surprise. And I was, Urotsukidoji is now one of my favorite anime's.

As it turns out Urotsukidoji is the name of a series of four films. The first two of which have been broken down to five episodes and spread onto the two discs. The first film is called "Legend of the Overfiend." It's basically about the premise that there are three worlds that co-exist on different realms. The human realm is Earth as we know it, the demon realm, and the beast realm are these realms. There is a myth about a being that is all powerful called the Overfiend. His coming can bring all realms together and cause death and destruction or a heavenly utopia. Demons and beasts hide as humans and search for the vessel for the Overfiend on Earth. The second film called "Legend of the Demon Womb" is a sequel that takes a different direction from the first. It follows the statement that "if the Overfiend is god, then there must also be a devil."

The films for the most part fit in the horror/adult genre. Everything is graphic from the violence to the sex. Fans have said that it would be better if there wasn't sex. I disagree, if you watch parts one and two you will see how sex plays a role and how it affects the characters. Nothing is sacred in this film too. There is demon sex, tenticle sex, beast sex, and good old world destroying sex. It's graphic, a little disturbing, but totally in tone with the film.

The quality of the discs are nice. The first episode is a little worn, but all episodes after are superb. There is no dub track so english subtitles will do. There is a minor problem on disc 2 were characters are speaking english and german and the dialogue is subtitled in japanese. The problem comes where the english subtitles are placed over the japanese ones making it very hard to make anything out. You can't switch any subtitle off too. It's okay though, it lasts for a couple minutes only. There are a few extras too. You get a small featurette on the style of anime, trailers, a bio on the creator, and ads for comics. A nice set all in all.

This is a good place to start for anime and hentai newbies. The story is strong so the sex does not feel like exploitation or a cheap sell point. The animation is really good too, I wasn't expecting that but I'm really surprised. All in all, you can't go wrong and once you watch the first episode, you'll find yourself going through the whole set in one sitting. I certainly did.
