Story: You may expect some kind of story in a softcore gay flick, but you’d be let down. Instead A Taste of Italy contains four unrelated vignettes, which are softcore versions of the scenes in Italian Style. Check out that review for a complete play-by-play of the scenes.
This was one of my favorite scenes in Italian Style, and holy cow did it get butchered here. The whole thing lasts about 6 minutes. Here’s what bothers me the most about this scene: there were some hardcore scenes here that had the penetration mosaic’ed out. At one point over 50% of the screen was all blurry. It almost seems like Lucas Kazan forgot to film any softcore angles when he shot this scene.
Here’s an odd twist… this was my least favorite scene in Italian Style, but once it’s been put through the sanitizer, it actually turns out pretty good! The blurry problem from scene 1 is gone, and there’s plenty of erotic softcore action without having to resort to any freaky angles.
If this one doesn’t make you yearn for the Italian countryside, you must be dead. Damn these guys are hot! This scene didn’t seem to lose anything in its transition to softcoredom. Passionate kissing is pretty much required for a softcore movie to work, and these 2 studs’ lips are locked throughout most of their encounter.
Anyone who’s already seen Italian Style may be wondering who the heck the stud of the cover of A Taste of Italy is. He’s absent from Italian Style, but shows up in scene four of A Taste of Italy basically just to check out the hot action and fondle himself. Sure, he’s a fine looking man (and looks amazing in those white bikini briefs of his!) but I’d rather just watch the two hunks go at it uninterrupted.
The A/V looks great, and I actually enjoyed the soft piano interludes.
If you watch past the credits, there is a brief behind the scenes party, but it isn’t translated at all, so unless you know Italian, you’ll have no idea what people are saying. There’s also a slideshow with the director’s commentary (which is the same commentary as on Italian Style), and previews for a few other softcore flicks.
With the exception of the complete bastardization of scene 1, A Taste of Italy is a very entertaining softcore flick. Obviously, if you have to choose between A Taste of Italy and Italian Style, Italian Style would win out easily. But, if for some reason, all you can get a hold of is softcore, then A Taste of Italy will provide plenty of jack-off material.
