"A Gay Man's Take on Straight Porn"
I was really not happy with David Stanley's The Contestants, but I gave him another chance with Swirl. Was I right to do so?

The Movie: I'll get the easy part out of the way first. Let's talk about the plot of this bizarre little movie. The movie starts in a mental institution where a girl's parents are visting her. We don't get to see the girl's face, but we are lead to belive that it's Kira Kerner, because as the hospital fades out, and we flash back, we see the same mom talking to her daughter, played by Kira. It seems that Kira is trying out for the cheerleading squad, and is trying to impress the school hunk, Chad at the same time. Now, I have to stop here and make note of something. This does not take place in a high school. This takes place in a community college. Why am I mentioning this? Well, the script makes the actors mention this fact at least three times in the film's short running time.

Okay, moving on. So sadly things won't work out for Kira because, for some unknown reason, the head cheerleader is out to get her. So, she devises a plan to have hunk boy to get Kira to go out with him, and then... well, just wait.

So the plot is pretty simple for the most part, but it works within the context of the film, and is way better acted than it deserves. The cast really does a good job with what they are given, so I had no problem with the dialogue scenes.

I do have to say that the movie does take a very weird and dark twist towards the end, but it actually makes the entire movie that much more fun.

Now on to the sex. Our first sex scene is between the head cheerleader and the school hunk. Things start out with a longing shot of... the hunk's ass. Yes, there is a man ass shot, and what a fine ass it is. But it then moves on to the actual sex, which is actually pretty decent. There is a nice heat, and it lasts for a good amount of time. The first scene was promising.

So, there is more plot, and then we get to Kira's fantasy with hunk boy. This scene is trying to be romantic, but in the end just feels really slow moving. The oral sex, and the foreplay just drag on forever, but once the actual fucking starts the pace picks up. Over all, not a great scene, but I've seen worse, and the ending after the pop shot is very... interesting.

Next we move on to a scene between Kira and her nerdy/hunky friend Tommy. He picks her up, there is some talking, and then... they fuck like animals. Again this scene is slower moving, and the energy is way down, but Kira does her best to seem entertained, although the guy just seems to be going through the motions. I don't think I've ever seen a bored guy in porn until this scene.

After this we move on to the one girl/girl scene in the movie. This one is between the head cheerleader, and her cheerleader co-hort. The scene is pretty good, and the girls do their best. It feels a bit rushed, and short. Normally girl/girl scenes last a while, but this one ends pretty quick. This is suprising considering the movie is rather short. But, what is there is pretty good.

The last sex scene is between the head cheerleader's parents. The scene is okay, although a little creepy because the woman who plays the mother seems to be on drugs or something, and is a little to out of it. The guy is not the best looking, but they could have chosen someone worse. The scene is decent, although a tad bit rough around the edges because of the film's choice of performers.

The plot takes over from this point, and the real fun begins as the big twist hits.

Tech Stuff: The picture is very nice, although the sound is a bit... rough. I think it has more to do with the actual film than the DVD, but just to warn you, there are some scenes were things get a bit scratchy.

Extras: You get a very dull behind the scenes video, some extra scenes, and a few previews. Nothing special.

*Note: This is one of the earlier Vivid DVD's so you cannot fast forward through two of the earlier adds. It's annoying as hell, but thank God Vivid changed this later on.

Overall: The movie is quirky and weird with a nice dark edge, but it never really amounts to what it could have if it was in a better director's or writer's hands. David Stanley has some good ideas, but he really doesn't know how to write them out well. The nice thing is that all the sex makes sense within the plot, and there are some nice dark touches that are in there. He could have just done more with them, because it would have helped give the sex scenes a tad bit more energy. Still, check it out if you can find it cheap.
