Running Time: 51 min.

Production Date: 1993 (cover) Sept. 4 1994 (feature)

Director: Francesco Marini

Cast: Derek C. Polonsky, M. D., Marian E. Dunn, Ph. D., and many realistic looking people

Initial Expectations: The last run of Sinclair Institute DVDs has been pretty good which gives me some hope.

Initial Reaction: There aren’t any magical new positions, but it does a great job of demonstrating how common positions can be changed into new positions for different effects.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody looking to spice things up with new positions or who has or is interested in Creative Positions For Lovers .

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody who thinks one position is enough.

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is very clear and well balanced. The video is good but obviously aged. It’s a little better than VHS but not a lot.

Music: The music is nicely balanced, romantic, and non-threatening.

Menus: As usual, the menus are very basic.

The Feature: Sex is always important in a long lasting relationship. If a couple only uses one or two positions or locations, things can tend to get boring. Locations can often be easy to try, but new positions don’t always come as easy. Sexual Positions for Lovers of course, helps with this problem and does it in a very friendly and non-threatening way. Drs. Derek Polonsky and Marian Dunn narrate the feature which uses many real, or at least realistic looking, couples. Of course, the real key is communication. Without communication you and you’re partner don’t really know what each other likes and what your limits are. After an anatomy lesson, we get to the main event. Although the anatomy lesson might annoy some, and I do think the entire introduction is a little long at almost twenty minutes, it is important to make sure that everybody’s on the same page.

The missionary position is covered first. It’s a good idea since it’s something everybody’s familiar with and should help to make some people comfortable with the subject. There are some definite advantages to this position, especially for the woman who gets almost constant clitoral stimulation. She can also control a lot of the action by how she places her body. It’s also a great position for couples because they can have constant eye contact.

The missionary position can be changed slightly to a scissors position where both couples are on their side which takes the weight off both of them. If the woman puts her legs up on her partner’s chest, it allows deeper penetration and both partners to watch where the action is. It’s not an easy position to maintain, but can be extremely erotic.

Spooning is covered for rear entry positions, where the guy goes behind the woman with both of them on their sides facing the same way. It’s a comfortable position for many couples because it’s the same position they sleep in. The biggest benefit here may be a really easy way to start up when one of you wakes up in the middle of the night feelin’ the urge.

Woman on top positions are started with the cowgirl position. Once again, the woman has a lot of control over where she wants his cock to hit her by how she moves. She can also have the added stimulation of her partner working her butt over with his hands or playing with her breasts. Unlike the missionary position, she can easily rub her clitoris for even more stimulation.

The doggie position is covered next. Although almost every couple knows this position, there are some added benefits to the position depending on her position. Once again, she can manually stimulate her clit (or have her partner do it for her) and he can work on her ass. It also makes it a lot easier for each member to maneuver themselves to please themselves the best.

If he leans back and she follows, doggie can turn into the reverse cowgirl position. It’s a little harder for her to balance herself, so she might need to balance herself off his knees. If she has a free hand, she can massage his balls or asshole or play with her clit.

Standing positions are also covered. The first is the man standing and completely supporting the woman with her legs wrapped around him. It’s not an easy position and the couple must have a good physical match. It puts a lot of stress on the body, but it isn’t always a bad thing as there’s a lot of clit stimulation. Balance is also a must. If you and your partner aren’t too coordinated, you might want to come up with a good excuse to tell the doctor before trying it. Much safer is the standing doggie position where she leans over on top of a dresser, table, or just bends over.

Sexual Positions for Lovers starts out slow, but does a very good job after the introduction taking its time with each position. Many common positions are covered along with easy ways to change them for different sensations. They’re demonstrated very well by showing a realistic couple having sex throughout the scene while the doctors narrate how each change affects the couple. It’s done very well and is just graphic enough to clearly demonstrate the position. At times it seems a little show, but there’s a lot of information covered. There aren’t a lot of extremely new positions here, but it gives a great basis. If you’re interested in adding new positions to your sex life but don’t really know where to start, pick this up. It’s a small price to pay for the added enjoyment of more positions.

Extras: The main extra is a short film called Tantric Steps to Prolonged Orgasm which lasts a little over a half hour. Tantra is an ancient concept that many people have heard about but don’t know much about. In tantra there isn’t a specific goal but instead a journey that focuses on both partners finding complete fulfilment. Breathing control is central to tantric sex. Because of this, breathing exercises are very important and can be done with your partner. Full body orgasms are also possible and go far beyond what most westerners know as orgasm. It’s similar to the genital orgasm most of us are used to but often go in waves throughout the entire body and last much longer.

Of course, positions are also important. In the male superior position, the woman normally has at least one leg over his shoulder or on his chest. Sitting positions are also commonly practiced which is very different for many westerners. Of course, female superior positions are also used and many times allow the sex to move more at the woman’s pace.

Orgasms are covered quite a bit. Techniques are demonstrated for extending the male orgasm. It’s shown mostly manually, but also talked about for doing during sex. The key here is knowing your body and good muscle control. Multiple orgasms are covered for both women and men. The key for women is relaxation and stimulation. As one orgasm fades, relax and enjoy the further stimulation. For men the key is to separate the muscles from the mind. You control the muscles and let the feeling continue in the man’s mind until he wants to let go with a spurt. It’s not an easy thing to do and will take a lot of work.

The sexual health info contains information about the Sinclair Intimacy Institute, a definition of sexual health, the history of explicit sexual health films, testimonials from sexual health professionals, and key points from consumer & customer research as well as professional research. The chapters are the only real way to get where you want to go if you want to check something out later. Finally, a short condom commercial is included. It’s a good commercial for taking on stand on making sure you and your partner protect both of you.

Themes: Straight, educational

Raincoat Factor: Very low

Overall: Currently, Sexual Positions for Lovers can be found online for between $15 and $25 with several stores offering it for under $20. If you’re feeling the need for new positions but are completely lost when it comes time to try them, it’s worth the money. It’s very detailed for the positions and there’s a lot of information for each one.

Note to Adam & Eve / Sinclair: The Sinclair DVDs have come along very well since the first were released. Please include a time stamp on future Sinclair DVDs. Couples will probably want to check back on this one and it’s a lot nicer to know what time to go back to. Yes, the chapter menu is there but a lot of times it’s clumsy if you’re searching.
