Preliminary Thoughts

Please note that I am an independent reviewer who happens to be a big fan of Private! I’ll begin with my preliminary thoughts about the film as I waited in anticipation for my mail-order copy to arrive in the post. I made some notes about the director, the concept and the mini-site. My full review of the film follows after these notes.

The Director

Kovi’s past works for Private included a number of ‘Black Label’ movies and a series of films in the ‘Pirate Fetish Machine’ range. Notably, he did a lot of work with Michelle Wild. For a while, Michelle was starring in all of his movies - and the extent to which you’d enjoy Kovi’s stuff depended on how much you were ‘into’ Michelle. Michelle was among the most popular and talented performers of her day, but personally I found she never quite ‘hit the spot’ as well as some other leading models of that time. (For example, I was much more excited by another girl Kovi used to work with, Patricia Pallona - aka Patricia Diamond). Kovi’s ‘Black Label’ titles often looked low-budget in comparison with the celebrated ‘Private Gold’ trilogies directed by Pierre Woodman or Antonio Adamo, so it’s good to see that Kovi himself is at the helm of ‘Porn Wars’ - having the chance, at last, to direct a high-concept, flagship production and to affirm his position as an A-list Private director. In a way, Kovi’s contributions to ‘Pirate Fetish Machine’ will have given him a useful background for directing ‘Porn Wars’ as a sci-fi parody. Kovi’s ‘Fetish Machine’ movies were never quite as pervy as Tanya Hyde’s, but I always preferred his ones because of the unique brand of bizarre creativity he and his team brought to the set designs, the lighting, the costumes and the make-up. In ‘Pirate Fetish Machine’, Kovi succeeded in creating his own, distinctive sci-fi playground - and it was a very sexy place to be!

The Concept

I have to admit it… I was never a big ‘Star Wars’ fan. I saw the original movie when it was originally released and yes - it was undoubtedly marvellous, spectacular and original. But as a Brit kid I was already a fan of ‘Doctor Who’ and I didn’t have room enough in my head to embrace a whole new sci-fi mythology - despite the fact that the ‘Star Wars’ special effects were far more whizzbang! Besides which, I didn’t fancy Princess Leia that much and I found the good guys bratty and annoying. I thought that Darth Vader, the Death Star and the Empire were far more cool and I was rooting for the bad guys throughout the picture. Again, my Brit prejudices came through - my favourite performances of the movie were those of Peter Cushing and Alec Guiness. I went on to see the original cycle of ‘Star Wars’ sequels but I don’t remember much about them except that they were noisy. By the time the ‘next generation’ hit the screen - the ‘Star Wars’ prequels - I’d tuned out. ‘Star Wars’ had become a massive merchandising phenomenon and I figured that the new movies would basically be a load of wank for the fanboys and the fangirls. I’ve still not seen any of the prequels and this leaves me wondering whether I’m going to miss out on a whole load of character references and story references in ‘Porn Wars’. I have some general knowledge about the world of ‘Star Wars’ but because I’m not up-to-date maybe some of the gags in the parody will go straight over my head. But how much does this worry me? Not a lot, to be honest! I’m looking forward to a hard, hot porn movie which sports a sense of humour and some mind-boggling special effects - the kind of product which Private does so well!

The Mini-site

The visual and audio design of the mini-site parodies the ‘Star Wars’ concept admirably. It’s slick work like this which lends credibility to Private’s recently-announced interest in branching out to non-porn products with sexy themes. Private obviously has enough technical talent and expertise on board to cut it in other markets - the standard of work achieved here equals the standard achieved in mini-sites for many mainstream movies. But this time it’s porn! ‘The Destiny Of the Galaxy Is in Your Hands’ - and there’ll probably be something else in your hands, too, by the time you’ve finished checking out the hardcore preview galleries and the video clips in this mini-site! The starlets look ultra-sexy as they brandish their wonderfully phallic light sabres at us, and there’s a full profile and a set of pics for each girl. Other highlights include a tantalising synopsis and an informative interview with Kovi. The content is the same whether you access it from the ‘Jodi’ side or the ‘Seth’ side, but the menu images are different so it’s worth sneaking a look through each access point. My appetite is definitely whetted.


‘Porn Wars’: The Review

This is a review of the ‘Special Edition’ of ‘Porn Wars’, which means that I’m looking at a disc full of ‘Extras’ as well as the film itself. At forty-two minutes the longest item on the ‘Extras’ disc is a documentary called ‘The Making Of Porn Wars’. This documentary is an invaluable source of information about the production, and I’ll be using it to inform my comments about the film and to give my observations a context.

‘Porn Wars’ was written by a team of script-writers led by Andrew Curtis. The team had experience of writing scripts for mainstream science fiction, and the approach they took with this project was to see it not so much as “porn” but as a conventional sci-fi story with sex added in. The result is a cracking tale in the finest tradition of space opera, although the plot does get a bit convoluted towards the end. Curtis and his team thought carefully about how to make the sex scenes work for the story. The hardcore action is usually tied in with the development of a character or situation, and this makes it all the more interesting to watch. Here’s a breakdown of the sex scenes:

‘Porn Wars’ is one of those rare examples of an adult movie where you’d be missing out on a lot of entertaining material if you simply jumped from one sex scene to the next and didn’t bother with the bits in between. From the story and the acting to the set designs, from the special effects to the costume designs and make-up, the standard of production is very impressive.

Many of the ideas and themes are borrowed from ‘Star Wars’, but you don’t have to be a sci-fi geek to enjoy the film. I was half expecting ‘Porn Wars’ to be laden with esoteric send-ups for the anoraks. Not at all - it’s an accessible drama, and everyone concerned worked hard to make it convincing. The image for the main menu of the DVD is accompanied by a parody of John Williams’ ‘Star Wars’ theme. This is pretty faithful to the original while standing up as an accomplished score in its own right - it’s Private’s best ever spoof of a mainstream composition. (A different musical track is used for the title sequence of ‘Porn Wars’. This is serviceable but nowhere near as striking as the John Williams parody.)

The special effects are a particular strength of the movie, supervised by an expert called Milk. During post-production Milk and his team brought their distinctive brand of magic to the film. They supplemented the studio-built sets and natural locations with virtual environments, using chroma key to replace green-screen backgrounds with computer-generated models. The result is a futuristic mise-en-scene, full of hi-tech wizardry and beautiful shapes and colours. Milk’s best work for the film is an awesome animation of a space battle - it’s at least as good as anything you’d see in a mainstream sci-fi show. The director, Kovi, is a skilled technician who knows how to tell the story cinematically and showcase the production. My only criticism of his story-telling would be that he sometimes allows the camera to linger a little too long over the fantastic set designs, slowing down the pace of the movie.

The narrative structure is essentially simple. Two sets of characters, the Jodi and the Seth, are pitted against each other in a war of survival. The Jodi are the goodies and the Seth are the baddies. In true ‘Star Wars’ fashion, the balance of power is described in a text which scrolls through a stellar field at the beginning of the film:

“These are dark times in the galaxy. War is everywhere. The Jodi warriors, who are fighting for good, are almost extinct. The last ray of hope is slowly diminishing, quashed by the dark forces which are crushing the galaxy like an iron fist. The only hope is in the hands of the remaining Jodi Knights. They are to train the next generation of Jodi at secret space stations. They have to be kept hidden in order to secure their safety, because the enemy is searching the galaxy to track every one of them down and destroy them. They are all biding their time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike…”

Besides their moral differences the Jodi and the Seth have distinctly different visual styles, so it’s easy to tell them apart. The Jodi use blue laser swords while the Seth have red. In terms of costume design, the Jodi wear more luminous clothes with softer, gentler fabrics, while the Seth wear predominantly darker garments with fabrics such as leather and latex.

Scene 1

The story begins on a huge space craft occupied by Victoria Swinger, the supreme mistress of the Seth. A military officer arrives and informs her that the location of the main Jodi base has at last been discovered. This is the news she has been waiting for. Now she can plan a surprise attack and defeat the Jodi once and for all. Victoria’s first appearance in the film is truly captivating. She is a haughty villainess, possessed of mysterious mental powers. We see her levitating inside the space craft - an effect achieved through chroma key. She’s wearing some spooky red contact lenses and an exotic costume which leaves little to the imagination. The futuristic environment in which she appears is entirely a creation of computer modelling, and this adds to the weirdness of the scene. Kovi gives us several extreme close-ups of Victoria’s red eyes, and in her later scene with Mya Diamond her eyeballs seem to liquefy and swirl around. This CGI-enhanced image must rank among the most striking close-ups ever seen in a Private movie. Indeed, Victoria is as much an icon in this film as Tania Russof was in Pierre Woodman’s ‘The Pyramid’. It’s as if Kovi has a particular fascination with Victoria’s beauty, and this isn’t the first time he’s made her seem exotic. Witness the split-screen fun he has with her in the last scene of ‘Tribal Fantasies’, where he gets her to have sex wearing a big-cat pantomime tail. Or witness the first scene of ‘Anal Mermaids’, where he casts her as a meek innocent turned slut - and where her sexy body is subjected to perverse scrutiny beneath a pair of magnifying glasses! Kovi is definitely beguiled by Victoria Swinger, and the viewer soon learns to share his fascination.

After this brief introduction to the Mistress of the Seth, Kovi takes us to the main Jodi base. This includes a huge training centre which looks like a gymnasium. There are several banners hanging from the ceiling, containing inscriptions in the style of the Far East. A cohort of attractive students is busy practising with laser swords, under the watchful eye of Tera Bond, the Jodi leader. The girls are all kitted out as if for martial arts, and their costumes are alluringly light and skimpy. A number of hi-tech droids fly across the screen, and the trainees’ laser swords shimmer and hum with energy. Eventually, Tera Bond dismisses the students, but Antonio Ross and Sarah Parker remain behind. Antonio wants to give Sarah a private demonstration of the art of mental combat. He strips her down to her knickers using only the power of his mind, and she crashes forward onto the mattress. “Look… vat you did!” she protests, somewhat bewildered and annoyed. But Antonio has her at a disadvantage, and before long he’s seduced her into fucking him. Sarah has fun with a space-age dildo as well as Antonio’s cock, and after some hot bouts of oral sex, pussy-pounding and anal penetration she’s rewarded with a generous helping of cum. Antonio spurts his love juice into her ass and splatters her quim.

The training sequence is notable for a number of different visual effects. The technique of duplicating long shots is used to create the illusion that the studio set is much more expansive than it really is. The blue sticks with which the Jodi students fence are turned into laser swords during post-production. (I suppose that the reason they’re called “laser swords” rather than “light sabres” is in order to avoid any ‘Star Wars’ copyright infringement.) The droids which whizz across the foreground are computer-animated models, and the stripping of Sarah Parker is a live-action stunt. (Wires are used to pull off her clothes). All credit to the experts responsible for creating these different effects - I’m sure an award or two is in order!

Sarah Parker is a discovery of Kovi’s, a girl whose obvious assets include a mammoth pair of boobs. As Antonio Ross puts it in ‘The Making Of Porn Wars’, Sarah is “a sex bomb”. A highlight of the behind-the-scenes documentary is the chance to see how the chemistry between Antonio and Sarah remained intense even between takes. My favourite moment is the one where Sarah waves to the camera and flirts with the viewer while her mouth is still crammed full of Antonio’s cock. It looks as if Antonio and Sarah couldn’t get enough of each other! (This ‘Making Of’ focus on a genuine chemistry between performers is something we’ve seen before in Private. The hottest example can be found in the ‘Report’ for Pierre Woodman’s ‘Tatiana’, in the sequence about Keri. As the commentator explains, “Keri has been the most pleasant surprise in the filming. Her innocence took the whole team aback. Woodman whispered sweet nothings in her ear, while David [Perry] fell desperately in love with her. The romance had only [just] begun…” Well, there doesn’t seem to be much innocence about Sarah Parker, but there’s no doubting that Antonio Ross was desperately ‘in lust’ with her on the set!)

Scene 2

Victoria Swinger may have the most iconic image in ‘Porn Wars’, but the most interesting role of the film surely belongs to Mya Diamond. Mya’s character undergoes an important change during the movie. She is an ambitious Jodi student who is overpowered by the Dark Lord of the Seth, Horst Baron. Horst turns her to the side of evil and she subsequently goes on to betray the Jodi. Mya is very happy to play a challenging part like this, as she explains in her interview for ‘The Making Of’. She says she enjoys the chance to do some “comedy”, by which she means dramatic acting. “And we have lots of comedy, which I like very much, so it’s not only about sex…” (Mya emphasises the word “sex”, flashing her eyes at the camera as if to tease her lecherous fans) “…we can also act a little bit!”

In her first scene of the film, Mya appears as a sensitive, melancholic student. She gazes over the city while droids zoom past her, and she reassures Antonio that the Jodi’s hiding place is safe. Her costume makes her look a lot like Lara Croft. She wears a long pony tail, a combat-green vest with knickers to match, a utility pouch and a pair of military boots - a very sexy outfit. No sooner has Antonio gone to bed than Mya is surprised by Horst Baron, an evil Darth Vader-type who has managed to infiltrate the base. Horst is another performer who says he’s pleased with his part in the movie, relishing the chance to play a villain. With his rich, sonorous voice and his melodramatic laugh he is, indeed, well-suited to the role. He also remarks on the novelty of doing a studio performance in front of green screens - he says that it makes a change from the usual sets of porn shoots, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The leather-clad Horst menaces Mya with his laser sword and the tension rises. Mya defiantly asserts that she’ll never surrender to the Seth, but Horst gives her no choice. He threatens to kill her if she doesn’t submit, and then he uses his evil charisma to mesmerise her into compliance. Poor Mya certainly looks helpless as she kneels before her dark new master. Her situation is reminiscent of a classic moment in ‘Lethal Information’ - an early Kovi feature for Private, released in 2001. It’s the moment when Grety looks up fearfully and submissively at the two armed thugs (Frank Gun and Mike Foster) who have ripped away the tarpaulin under which she’s been hiding in the workshop. The tension between Horst and Mya has exactly the same quality of kinkiness about it.

Mya is soon sucking on Horst’s dick, and we move into the second sex scene of the film. As the action starts, a musical soundtrack kicks in. It’s a jazz-funk number, with a somewhat retro, seventies feel. This is standard porn music, in a conspicuously different style to the space-opera movie score with which the film began. Horst shifts into his lustful “Yeah, baby!” mode. He’s now less Darth Vader and more Pop Shot (the spoof porn stud who appears in the UK’s satirical comic book, ‘Viz’.) The sex is certainly well staged and it’s fun to watch. Mya’s boobs look great with her vest rolled up above them, and her bum is firm and tight. In the long shots of the couple fucking we see the shadow of a massive blade rotating overhead, sweeping across the set. An even more impressive effect marks the transition from the anal sequence to the cumshot finale. Just before the couple change positions for the last time, a phallic space vessel glides past in the background, making an electronic whining sound. This stylish piece of business reads like a signal that the sexual climax is nigh… (Although in this case it’s a sci-fi effect, it recalls the way in which Pierre Woodman, when filming sex in outdoor locations, would often cut away from his immediate run-up to the cumshot and show, fleetingly, a butterfly fluttering its wings, or some other image of wildlife nearby, before focussing back on the messy finish. What we have here is a touch of auteurism, a momentary distraction which reminds us that the scene is authored.) And so to the climax… Mya lies face up on the bench and Horst fucks her tits before shooting his spunk all over them. Watch out for the thick glob of cum which rolls between Mya’s tit-cleavage and down towards her throat. Mya gathers it up on her finger and pops it into her mouth.

Scene 3

Tera Bond, the Jodi leader, interrupts another training session to announce some disturbing news. A secret Jodi academy on a distant planet has suddenly stopped sending signals, and the cause needs to be investigated. Antonio fears the worst, having had a nightmare premonition of disaster. The suspicion has to be that the academy has fallen prey to the Seth, but Tera needs proof of this. She explains that she is going to lead a mission to the distant planet, accompanied by Antonio and two other trainees, Nikki Rider and Liz Honey. Mya also wants to come, but Tera refuses her permission to join the investigation. Tera claims that Mya needs to learn modesty before she can be considered worthy of a mission. Mya feels snubbed by this, but she decides to tail the party anyway, so that she can spy on its progress and report to Horst, her secret master.

Tera Bond is officially the leading lady of the film. In her interview for ‘The Making Of’, she expresses the same point of view as Mya Diamond. She says she likes working on big-budget features like ‘Porn Wars’ because this gives her the chance to do some “comedy”. She adds that she doesn’t like bargain-basement sex productions where she is simply shown to a bed or a sofa and introduced to the stud. Cheap porn is “so simple,” she complains. “You go in: ‘Hi…!’ ‘You are very nice…!’ ’Can you suck me…?’ ‘Yeah…!’” (She doesn’t add, “Whatever!” - but that’s her tone!) It has to be said that Tera’s dramatic acting as the star of the show is quite good. The only problem is that it’s sometimes difficult to follow her lines. The sound mix isn’t perfect, Tera’s Hungarian accent is strong, and the translation of lines from Hungarian to English is often wobbly, to say the least. Nevertheless, Tera is believable in her role as the Jodi leader and it’s rewarding to watch her act. On balance, it’s more entertaining to hear the Hungarian and Czech performers speak their own lines in English, as is the case in this movie, than to hear them dubbed by voice artists.

Having landed their space craft near the ambushed academy, Tera and her team pass through a desolate quarry littered with the corpses of Jodi knights. They are unaware that Mya is following them. The team press on, exploring a subterranean cave in search of clues. Nikki and Liz chance upon an unconscious warrior, the sole survivor of the Seth assault. They use their sexual powers to revive him…

As explained in ‘The Making Of’, the scenes in the quarry were shot on location at Gant, near Budapest, and it was freezing cold during filming. The cast and crew endured cramped conditions inside the buses which served as dressing rooms, but the girls are seen taking it all in their stride and keeping up their sense of humour. Nikki and Liz are fitted with some very exciting costumes. They wear shiny capes, knee-length boots and sexy arm bracelets. (I have a fetish for arm bracelets!) The dominant colours are brown and fawn, blending in with the location.

The actor playing the survivor is credited as ‘The Drifter’. During most of his scene with Nikki and Liz he remains flat on his back, responding to the girls’ lead. At first they are gentle and soothing, coaxing him back to life, but before long they’re working his cock with a vengeance. This is a really hot fantasy - having a pair of ‘space babes’ clamber all over you, deep-throating you, mashing their pussies into your face and humping up and down on your dick. I love the bit where Nikki grabs hold of The Drifter’s swollen prick and helps stuff it up Liz’s ass-hole, but that’s just one horny moment among many. By the end of the scene, The Drifter is up off the ground and shooting copious quantities of cum all over Liz’s bottom and back. Nikki is straight in there with her pierced tongue, lapping up the mess.

Scene 4

Tera asks The Drifter to recount what became of the Jodi academy. This is the cue for a nightmarish flashback sequence in which we see a detachment of Seth troops arrive at the quarry and kill all the Jodi knights. The sequence is full of impressive stunt work, action choreography and close-quarters combat with the laser swords. Computer-animated battle droids zip around the quarry, zapping the Jodi with deadly rays. The action here is at least as good as you’d expect to find in mainstream, straight-to-video sci-fi. Everyone involved should be congratulated on the quality and excitement of the scene.

The Drifter explains that the academy had entrusted the knowledge of its whereabouts to a freelance individual, Lauro Giotto, in exchange for news and information from the outside. It must have been Lauro who betrayed the academy to the Seth - and it’s possible that he knows the locations of other Jodi bases, too. Mya is lurking in the shadows, eavesdropping on Tera’s conversation with The Drifter, but she’s spotted by Liz and she has to make a run for it. At this point no one realises it’s her, and she manages to escape. The Drifter tells Tera where she can find Lauro. Tera and her team immediately take off in pursuit of this dangerous man. Their destination: a bar in a gigantic space station.

During the space flight, Tera’s ship is attacked by a squadron of four Seth fighters. Tera is in real difficulty here, but she manages to blow up all the bandits and to dock safely at the space station. In this sequence, Milk, the special effects supervisor, gives us the most spectacular two minutes of the movie - all of it computer-generated. This scene has the lot: stellar backgrounds, planets, asteroids, dog-fighting space-ships, laser fire and explosions. If the ambush in the quarry was a good piece of film-making, this sequence in space is truly outstanding. In ‘The Making Of’ documentary the commentator boasts that “‘Porn Wars’ sets a new standard in adult cinema, worldwide.” He argues that the movie’s special effects are “on a par with and sometimes even excelling more conventional film productions.” More than anything else, it’s Milk’s achievements in the space sequence which justify these claims: it’s breathtaking stuff!

Tera and her team find Lauro in a bar on the space station, but at first he refuses to talk. In ‘Star Wars’, George Lucas established the ‘space bar’ scene as a staple of modern sci-fi, spoofing saloon bar scenes in the western, and Kovi makes a fair stab of rehashing it here. Bizarre aliens sit around tables and quarrel with each other, a punk performance-poet is flanked by dancing girls with violet hair, and Kovi himself makes a cameo appearance as a cackling bartender. Lauro is a dangerous-looking dude wearing shades and leathers. Antonio is keen to force him to talk, but Tera prefers to use “peaceful” methods… so she leads him into a back room and fucks his brains out! Tera’s hardcore scene with Lauro is a real sizzler. She brings attitude and passion to the sex and creates the most intense porno vibe of the movie. The scene ends with another cum-on-the-bum job - Lauro christens Tera’s arse cheeks with several lashings of spunk.

Afterwards, back in the bar, Lauro seems willing to tell Tera whatever she wants to know. He says he hadn’t intentionally led the Seth to the Jodi academy. It appears that someone had sneaked a signalling device into his space craft, and that’s how the Seth had tracked the location. Before Lauro has the chance to divulge anything more he is assassinated by a killer droid… but who’s given the order? Tera and Antonio sense a familiar presence in the bar and take a sudden interest in a shrouded figure sitting alone. It’s none other than Mya Diamond, who they now realise is a traitor and a spy! Disgusted, Tera and her team take Mya prisoner and fly back home to the Jodi base.

Scene 5

Mya is incarcerated in a Jodi cell, hemmed in by a force field. It’s during this scene of imprisonment that she gives her best acting performance. She confronts her captors, Tera and Antonio, sneering at their foolishness in believing they can resist the might of the Seth. Quivering with bitterness, she promises them they will both be killed… they will meet a sticky end at the hands of Victoria and Horst! Tera storms off, refusing to listen to her anymore, but she and Antonio concoct a plan. If they allow Mya to escape, she’ll lead her Seth superiors to the base… and then they can trap them when they least expect it! (Or something like that… I find it more difficult to follow the plot at this stage in the film.)

Everything proceeds according to plan. Mya is allowed to escape. Not realising that her former allies are using her as a pawn, she jets off to Victoria Swinger’s space-ship and delivers her report. The effect is highly cinematic, and very seductive. It’s no wonder that Mya falls straight to her knees and starts munching on Victoria’s cunny! Victoria is happy to return the favour. Scene 6

A pair of caped figures trek across mountainous terrain on their way to the Jodi headquarters. Once they’ve infiltrated the base, the woman pulls back her hood. We see that it’s Victoria… and her companion is Horst. They find a room overlooking the power generator, which is dominated by a column of crackling blue light, but before they get any further their way is barred by Tera and Antonio. Tera challenges them to a duel… but it’s not a sword fight she has in mind, it’s a fuck! Can they resist the charms of the Jodi? The answer is obviously not! Kovi stages the movie’s final sex scene with careful attention to composition. He uses long shots to counterpoint the different positions assumed by the two copulating couples. When Victoria gets her DP, the variation is, ‘A Seth and a Jodi fuck the same Seth at the same time’! Finally, here are some notes on the extra features in the ‘Special Edition’ of ‘Porn Wars’.

The ‘Special Edition’ boasts a holographic cover. The image on the back cover varies, depending on which angle you look at it. At first, Liz Honey and Nikki Rider look out at you bare-breasted, brandishing their laser swords. The ‘Special Edition’ includes an ‘Extras’ disc, with contents as follows:
