The Short Story
Initial Expectations: I havenít heard anything about the Alexander Instituteís DVDs, but theyíve impressed me with their selection of educational videos. Iím going into this one with a bit of hope.
Initial Reaction: Itís a bit long due to the format, but also very well done.
Who Should Watch It : Anybody wanting to learn a few massage techniques
Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting a very clinical look at massage or actual sex
The Technical Stuff
Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are okay. The audio is clear and free of background noises. Itís fairly well balanced, but there are a few areas where the balance leaves the audio feeling a little jumbled. The video is also okay. Thereís a bit of grain throughout the movie and the lighting varies slightly as well. Sometimes it helps the feature and sometimes it gives it an odd feeling due to lighting jumps.
Music: The music is very romantic and varies slightly in balance throughout the movie. It helps the movie almost the entire time.
Disc Complaints: The DVD authoring is very basic. To start with, thereís no time stamp, which means youíre limited to chapter breaks and scanning through most of the movie for navigating the DVD. The menus are also very rough, making you select each selection once to select it and then selecting it again to activate it. I hope these are just problems that are due to this being an early Alexander Institute release, but Iím not sure. Thereís also a commercial for the Alexander Instituteís Intimate Loving series that you canít skip past or even fast forward through. This always pisses me off, and Iím deducting a half point from the overall score because of it.
Menus: The menus are very simple. The both the main menu and the chapter menu clearly lay out the choices with a still behind them.
The FeatureWith sensual touch, one has to learn how to appreciate their surroundings. One shouldnít just jump into massage for the full experience, as you should want soft and warm surroundings. Attention should also be paid to the other senses through things such as music, incense, food and drink, and touch without losing a sense of fun. After covering ways to prepare for a massage techniques are covered for back massage, including the different types of touch which can be used. Naturally, front massage is covered next, including extra tips for massaging the head, hands, and feet.
The material in Loverís Massage is presented very nicely. It starts with a guy arriving home to find his lover in some sexy lingerie with a video of the movie ready to go and their kid at the babysitter. The movie moves between the couple watching the video looking like theyíre having a great time, a couple demonstrating the massage techniques in the video, and Dr. Patti Britton giving clinical comments now and then. Thereís a very nice balance between the two couples, which strengthens the movie by mixing in a very romantic and playful feeling with the instructional nature of the feature. It also makes the subject look very easy and approachable while reinforcing the techniques by giving two different demonstrations of them. Itís also helped out by keeping Dr. Brittonís comments at a minimum, which is good because she comes off as a bit too dry and clinical compared to the rest of the feature. Surprisingly, the biggest fault of the feature is also the couple watching the movie and their demonstrating the techniques as it makes the feature seem a bit long at times. Overall, however, Loverís Massage is a very nicely done instructional release, and one that I wouldnít hesitate to recommend to couples who want to add a little massage to their play.
The Extra StuffThereís plenty of sexuality information, which includes both a long question and answer section with Dr. Patti Britton covering many areas of sex as well as general sexuality information. A trailer is included for the Intimate Loving series which this DVD is a part of. Thereís also trailers for the Soulmates series, Sex, Love, and Everything Else, and Sexual Healing. Finally, thereís a bonus scene.
|Bonus Scene - Sharon Kane and a guy|
The bonus scene comes from What Women Want. After a chat with various women about ordinary things that can turn them on, things move to Sharon being surprised when she comes home to find her man cooking her dinner. After they eat a bit, Sharon moves to her manís lap and feeds him his vegetables with a smile before their clothes magically disappear and move to the floor. Sharon goes from riding him cowgirl style on his lap to letting him fuck her missionary and doggie style on the table, and they finish up cuddling together on the table.
This is a great scene. The educational portion is nicely done, and shows that sometimes itís the little things that matter the most. The setup to the sex is fun and romantic, and although the sex is extremely softcore thereís so much passion between Sharon and her man that it was impossible for me to not like it. This is far from a graphic scene, but itís so romantic and loving that it doesnít need to be graphic. This is a very hot and very well done scene.
The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff
Themes: Straight, instructional, and massage
Raincoat Factor: Medium. Thereís no sex, but the material is presented in a fairly graphic and erotic manner
Condom Usage: None needed
The Bottom Line:Currently, many of the Alexander Institute DVDs can be found online for between about $11 and $22, with most stores offering them near the top end. If youíre looking for some guidance on massage, this one should be well worth the money. The material is presented in a very friendly manner and demonstrated nicely. The technical aspects are fairly average and the DVD authoring is a bit clunky, but thereís some nice effort put into the extras. This is a pretty good DVD that would have been ever better with more experienced authoring.
Note to the Alexander Institute: You have a great movie here, but the authoring on the DVD definitely held it back. I hope in the future you can find somebody who can do a better job on your DVDs, as it will definitely give consumers a better feeling about your product. If the rest of your releases are as good as this one, they deserve it.
