The Little Details

Running Time: 57 min.

Director: Kenneth Knoll

Cast: Linda De Villers, Ph.D., Bryce Britton, M.S., and Alexander B. Taylor, Ph.D. as sex therapist commentators and Tawny Roberts, Ricky Roberts, Sabrine Maui, Donald James, Lorna Payne, and Jason Creed in sexual roles

The Short Story

Initial Expectations: This has been a pretty good series so far. I have a bit of hope for this one.

Initial Reaction: Itís a nice beginnerís sex movie, but more experienced people might find themselves a little bored.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody whoís a bit uncomfortable with sex or who feels a little trapped in the box.

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody looking for new positions to try

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are nicely done. The audio is clear and well balanced, with both the voiceovers and the performers appearing at the same level. The video is also nicely done. Thereís just a hint of grain, but that is also somewhat due to some of the footage being slowed down to match the voiceover a little better.

Music: The music has a very soft feel, and somewhat surprisingly keeps a very western feel to it. It works well for the feature, and helps to keep it romantic.

Menus: The main menu is okay. It nicely lays out the choices and has a little animation throughout the menus to give a good first impression. There isnít any chapter menu.

The Feature

There are many different aspects to the Kama Sutra. This time, the sensual art of lovemaking is covered from intimacy to ecstasy. Although there are many different views of sex, itís the common thread that runs through all humanity. After a little look at some of the views on sexuality through history, and the differences between eastern and western views on it, thereís a look at how both men and women look at sex and where some of their focus might be misguided.

After learning where we might be going wrong, the experts give clues on how to get back on the right track. Thereís plenty of reminders on the importance of communication, as well as reminders that it doesnít matter what youíre doing because if youíre connected doing something there can be a spark between you. Thereís also talk about food or drink with sex and romance, music, and the importance of being both spontaneous and planning things out. It moves on with talk about many different aspects of foreplay and keeping foreplay from becoming routine by pointing out many forgotten erogenous zones and ways to bring in foreplay outside of the bedroom. It discusses teasing, strip teases, and some of the importance of panties. It moves through oral sex and into intercourse, continuing the themes of variety, communication, and following your emotions.

Kama Sutra: The Sensual Art of Lovemaking is an okay educational release. It definitely has a purpose, but due to itís title I think many people will expect something vastly different than what this release delivers. With ďKama SutraĒ in the title, I think most people expect wild positions and more of an eastern feel to sex. Instead, Kama Sutra: The Sensual Art of Lovemaking comes off as a gentle reinforcement that sex isnít dirty and that it absolutely positively has to take place in the dark in the bedroom. Thereís nothing wrong with features like this, as I know that thereís plenty of people out there who really do need that reinforcement. For that, it does work nicely. Itís very nonthreatening and makes sex feel natural. In some cases it makes it too non-threatening, as there were times I couldnít help but laugh at Dr. Britton in the movie. Kama Sutra: The Sensual Art of Lovemaking is a nice reinforcement that sex isnít dirty and should be enjoyed with someone youíre intimate with, but will definitely disappoint anybody looking for much of an eastern view or new positions.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery contains over forty nice looking snapshots. Thereís also questions and answers with the experts. You have the choice between watching the questions all at once and watching them individually.

The questions and answers with the experts lasts about fifteen minutes. After talking about communication with Dr. DeVillers, she gives a few examples on how to gently guide your partner without making them feel threatened. Dr. Britton and Dr. Taylor talks about the essentials for enhancing intimacy before Dr. DeVillers talks about erogenous and non-erogenous zones. Dr. Britton returns to talk about massage before Dr. Taylor talks about playfulness and balancing pleasures. Itís a nice collection of interviews. Although some of the footage here was in the movie, it nicely builds on it as well as including a few outtakes. This is a very good extra for the feature.

The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff

Themes: Straight and educational

Raincoat Factor: High

Condom Usage: None

The Bottom Line:

Currently, Romantic Artsí DVDs can be found online at many mainstream stores for around $15. Rent this one before you buy it. Thereís a few good tips, but I canít see it as having much replay value. The technical aspects are nicely done, and thereís even a bit of effort put into the extras. This is a nciely done educational DVD.

Note to Romantic Arts: You might want to watch some of your titles. I can see a lot of people being ticked off and not giving you another chance if this is the first of your releases they check out due to it having ďKama SutraĒ in the title.
