A couple (Taylor Hayes and Dale DaBone) and their friend (Voodoo) are looking to take on the adult industry by storm. After making an adult video of Hayes with a roofer, they rush off to the warehouses of Hollywood to make it big. They quickly find out that the sexual playground of the adult industry is not the nice play they thought it was.
Fade to Black is presented in a full frame aspect ratio, 1.33:1, which appears to be the film's original aspect ratio. The picture quality is perfect with no blemishes or artifacts present. The color levels are perfectly set.
The available audio track is a 2.0 English Stereo track. The dialog can always be heard above the sound of the music. The track is your standard stereo adult film track, the dialog appears to be in mono with the music in stereo. Nothing special here, but nothing special was expected to be here. No other language tracks and no subtitle options are available.
There are ten chapters available from the main menu for Fade to Black. They provide decent navigation through the disc, but given how good the film was, it would have been better if they had linked all the chapters that are actually in the film to the main menu. There are about 30 throughout the film, but only ten of them link to the main menu, making the rest relatively useless as you don't know where they are going to. There is a time code for this feature, so time searching is available.
The extras available on the disc are Vivid's usual collection of unrelated garbage. The Multiple Angles are available for most of the sex scenes, but are probably parts of the scene that were cut from the film when putting it on the disc. The available previews are for Deep Inside Kira Kener, Ultimate Raylene, Devon: The Lost Footage and Prisoner. The Fetish Rooms are links to the following fetishes inside the movie: Pussy Eating, Missionary, Cowgirl, Doggie and Anal. The Bonus Rooms contain scenes from Dangerous, Haunted, She Town, Unconscious, Blue Room and Dupe. The Photo Gallery contains 18 photos that play on a track. The Web is an advert for Vivid's Internet presence.
Fade to Black is a plot based adult film from Vivid that managed to win eight AVN awards (the box proudly proclaims this) and very deservedly so. My plot synopsis earlier on doesn't even begin to go into what this film is truly about. It starts out looking like it is a drama about the adult industry itself, but then the story deviates into something completely different, becoming a thriller about deceit, control and human emotions where nothing is as it seems. Not wanting to spoil the movie for anyone I stopped the synopsis before anything was given away.
The story for this film is very well written. If the hardcore sex was cut out of the film, I think this one could be released to the mainstream market successfully. Some people will probably cringe when they read this, but this film is on the same level, if not higher, as most Wicked Films productions.
The acting in the film is good too. As well as being a very visually appealing cast, the actors all manage to put in really good performances, with the non-sex parts as well as the sex parts. The sex scenes all fit the film, instead of being forced into it. Unfortunately this means that some of the scenes end up losing some of the heat. But they way those scenes were filmed and edited makes for a better and more believable movie. Don't worry though, there are plenty of hot scenes in the film as well. The scenes might be harder than couples are looking for, but not hard enough for fans of nasty sex. The scenes range from vaginal, oral and anal sex with titty fucking, a hand job and anal masturbation.
The music used in the film is really well done as well. It all appears to be original and made for the film. The music really sets the mood well for the plot portions as well as the sex portions. It would have been nice, considering how good the film is, if Vivid had gone the full distance and given the film a full 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround track. Given the quality of the film I think it would have been worth it, but nothing is perfect.
The Money Shot:
I recommend Fade to Black to anyone who likes to watch an adult film for more than just the fucking. For those who also enjoy a story with their porn, this is a very rewarding film and definitely a must see. The sex is slightly harder in places than some couples might like and probably not hard enough for the fans of nasty sex. This is definitely not a film for anyone that hates a plot to get in the way of their porn. If this film sounds good to you, buy it, you'll probably find yourself watching it more than once.
