Running Time: 72 min.

Production Date: 9 / 15 / 1995

Director: Brad Armstrong & Greg Steelberg (Greg Steele)

Cast: Jill Kelly, Nici Sterling, Jeanna Fine, Liza Harper, Steven St. Croix, Brad Armstrong, Brick Majors, Anthony Crane, Danny Dallas, Jeff Chazz, and Paul Hug

Initial Expectations: I have fairly high expectations as it’s a Brad Armstrong feature. Jill Kelly and Nici Sterling don’t hurt anything either.

Initial Reaction: It’s well done, but nothing special.

Audio /Video Quality: For the age of the movie, both are excellent! It’s not that common that new features come out looking this good. There are still a few flaws, such as a little grain to the picture during some of the movie, but that’s about it. The audio is very clear and doesn’t have any outdoor noise.

Music: The music is well balanced and extremely varied. The music from the first scene I’ve heard in other features, and the second scene is an 80s style rock song with lyrics. Other scenes have a rock style to them as well as some techno and tender music. It’s a nice variety and shows some care about the movie.

Review: Long ago (or at least over five years) in a galaxy, well, very, very close, Wicked was a small group of rebels fighting against a powerhouse of mediocre porn. Sometimes it’s hard to remember back that far. It was a time of confusion, or at least it seems that way looking back on it since Jenna had natural breasts. Even then, despite this confusion, Wicked was known for making well done movies. Double Cross is one of those movies.

Double Cross revolves around the aftermath of a heist gone wrong. It’s a lot easier to make pornos about the aftermath than the heist itself because it’s hard to rob people with your pants around your ankles or your dick in a gorgeous woman’s ass. That’s not to say it can’t be done. It just isn’t done here. We start out with Jill Kelly and Steve St. Croix dumping their partner’s dead body along the road after ripping off the bad guys. It’s kind of like Robin Hood only I don’t think Little John ever looked as good as Jill does. They only have to meet Steve’s friend and pick up some papers to get across the border. Well, that and screw in the back of a pickup truck. For an outdoor night scene this scene looks and sounds great! I don’t know if it was filmed in a studio or not, but if it really was outdoors there’s no outdoor wind noises or other noises to distract from the real sounds. There’s also virtually no grain to the picture. Great job on the transfer, Wicked! The scene is worth the attention also. Jill has one fine body and Steven does a great job of working it over. It was almost too bad to have to see it end.

Steve and Jill meet up with his friend (Anthony Crane) to get the papers and head back to Anthony’s place. It’s not that nice of a place, but I’m guessing that the rent is really high. At least if I was the landlord the rent would be really high. Then again, maybe he doesn’t know about the show that Nici Sterling and Jeanna Fine put on while washing clothes in the back yard. It’s a pretty good lesbian scene and it does have toys, for those of you who care one way or the other. I have to admit that I almost always like Nici, but this does seem to be one of her better performances.

Finally, the sleazebags (Brad Armstrong, Brick Majors, and two other guys) show up. You can tell they’re bad guys because they all wear black and they scowl a lot. Plus they have big guns (many of which look like fun!). They spread out to find Steve and Jill and start with Anthony, who sold Jill and Steve out. Anthony cared more about money than the realization that these are bad guys. Bad guys who don’t pay and if you make a fuss will make you watch as Brick screws Liza, your girlfriend, on the bar. Liza looks really good here and does a nice job of both resisting and then giving in. It’s not a stellar performance, but it keeps it light rather than making it into a rape scene. Anthony also does a good job of staying pissed off in the corner.

While Jill showers outside, Steve takes care of some business. He’s seen some of the sleazebags and knows that somebody must know what’s going on. He also knows that there isn’t much honor between thieves and goes straight to Anthony. While Anthony fights the losing battle to try and convince Steve he was robbed, Brad has tracked down Jill. Brad scowls at Jill enough that she sells out Steve before taking on Brad. This is a very well done outdoor scene and it changes things around a little from the normal scene. Rather than start with the shower scene, Brad starts the shower up again in the middle of the scene. It’s not much of a twist, but it’s just different enough to stand out. There’s some very good chemistry between Brad and Jill and it too raises the scene a couple notches above average.

When Steve wakes up Brad is there holding Jill at gunpoint. It’s a good standoff as Nici confirms what Steve thought all along. She’s one of the bad guys. There’s a nice low budget action sequence here to finish things off and it isn’t what most people would expect from a porno.

Double Cross has a lot of the feel of the stereotypical porno. Nothing is developed too good and it’s obvious that it doesn’t have a very big budget. Unlike the stereotypical porno, everything is very well done. There’s a little plot development and you can tell that the creators cared about the movie. Double Cross was made at the time when more pornos were starting to try to be something a little more serious. Double Cross starts to do that pretty good and we can see some of where Wicked’s movies of today come from.

Extras: As usual with Wicked releases, there’s a slide show, bios, trailers, web site info, company profile, Wicked Casino (DVD-ROM), and AVN winners and nominations. The slide show is your typical Wicked slide show, only a little shorter than normal. The picture quality is excellent and it’s automated with about five seconds per picture. It only lasts about a minutes and a half, which is shorter than most. The bios are also standard Wicked bios with a few stills of the performer, an audio background, a list of other Wicked movies, and a link to the scene. Jill Kelly, Jeanna Fine, Nici Sterling, Liza Harper, Brad Armstrong, and Steven St. Croix are covered. Finally, there’s trailers for Double Feature!, Pornogothic , and Sex Safari .

Themes: Straight, lesbian, anal, toys, and light masturbation

Raincoat Factor: Medium

Overall: Currently, Double Cross can be found online for between $25 and $30. Although it’s a good movie and has a very good transfer, this is way too high, even if you’re a fan of Jill Kelly. Supposedly Wicked’s prices are going to be dropping soon and this title should be at the top of the list. Rent it first as it’s basically a movie only DVD.

Note to Wicked: This is one of the titles that should have you analyzing your pricing structure. I admit that the picture is top notch, but this DVD is half again as much as most other companies would sell it for. It’s also very shy on extras for the price.
