The Short Story
Initial Expectations: I went into this series not really sure what to expect, but not expecting anything too great.
Initial Reaction: Itís one of the only DVDs I really wish I would have skipped.
Who Should Watch It : Anybody wanting to be depressed sexually or who wants to lose weight through throwing up
Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting something with an emotion other than hate and fear
The Technical Stuff
Audio /Video Quality: The audio is okay. Itís nicely balanced, but some of the dubbed lines feel like theyíre just being read off a sheet of paper rather than feeling like theyíre the ďactual voicesĒ of the characters. The video leaves a bit to be desired. The animation isnít that developed, think Pokemon, but much of it looks a little fuzzy, almost as if itís a soft focus problem. Thereís also some that has off-color bars through it.
Music: The music varies a bit to fit whatís happening in the movie. Itís normally well balanced with the rest of the audio.
Menus: The menus are the same on all four DVDs. The main menu is nicely animated, and gives a pretty good first impression. It would have been better if it hadnít gone on for nearly forty five seconds before letting you make a choice. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a title for that scene.
The FeatureThe Desert Island Story X box set consists of Desert Island Story X Part 1, Desert Island Story X Part 2, Desert Island Story X Part 3, and Desert Island Story X Part 4. As Iíve covered each of these episodes in detail already, Iím going to cover some general trends of the series here and leave the specifics to the individual reviews.
Desert Island Story X tells the story of five young women. One of them comes from a very wealthy family, and when preparing to have a wild party on their familyís yacht, itís hijacked and the girls are taken across rough waters to an unknown island. The girls fall in and out of the hijackerís clutches, and are raped every time theyíre caught. As they try to stay free, the girls start to mistrust each other, and at times even want to be raped.
Although I hate to say anything good about this series due to it actually making me nauseous, I do have to admit that it did do a few things right. The story, as disgusting as it is, does develop nicely over the four episodes. You see traits come out of the characters and see them grow from episode to episode. It also shows the many reactions to being raped, although I have to admit that many times I thought they were trying to be played for some kind of sick amusement more than anything.
The sex is the most disturbing part of the series. Very little sex in Desert Island Story X is consensual. In fact, I think thereís only one consensual scene in the entire series. Most of the sex is complete with women screaming for mercy, crying, and struggling as the men either laugh at them, smile shrewdly, or just force themselves onto the women. Even the consensual scene has a dark feeling to it as the man tricks the woman in order to fuck her. The enjoyment of that scene, although tricked, was probably the high point of the entire series.
In the end, I really canít find a single reason to like anything about Desert Island Story X. The story and sex are so sickening and itís the only series Iíve watched thatís actually made me nauseous. In all honesty, I can think of no good reason why any human being should ever watch the Desert Island Story X box set!
The Extra StuffThe extras are the same on each and every DVD in the box set. The A-side of the DVD contains a few photo galleries and website information. The feature gallery lasts almost one minute with about six seconds per full screen photo. Dayton Raines and Miko Lee each get their own photo galleries also, with each of them running about two minutes with six seconds per nice looking full screen photo. Thereís The B-side of the DVD contains trailers for most of NuTechís animated releases. Sadly, these are the same extras on every DVD in this series.
The Down -n- Dirty Sex Stuff
Themes: Anime, rape, abuse, oral, peeing, anal (implied), lesbian, and group
Raincoat Factor: Very low
Condom Usage: None, since social diseases havenít become a problem among animated characters yet
The Bottom Line:Currently, the Desert Island Story X Box Set can be found online for between $25 and $72 with many stores offering it for around $50. There isnít anything worthwhile for extras, as theyíre the same on all four DVDs, and the technical aspects are lacking.
Note to NuTech: I really wish youíd pay a little attention to how badly your competition, such as Central Park and Kitty, are making your DVDs look and try to improve them. They would have released this entire series on one DVD at roughly half the cost you charge. This makes for much happier customers who seek out your product much better.
