Peter Balakoff (aka Ted Roter) was one of many former exploitation film directors turned hardcore film directors to make ends meat. Some did well while others floundered. Roter is somewhere in the middle. Although his films are frequently poorly shot and feature less than pleasing production values, he makes up for these minor faults through his surprisingly smart scripts and above average acting from his cast of relative unknowns.
Here we have two of his least seen films, Hollywood She-Wolves and Paul, Lisa, And Caroline. Although She Wolves is nothing more than a run of the mill porn, PLC is a surprisingly insightful look at a menage-a-trois lifestyle. Roter's stock actress Gena Lee is Caroline, just married to Paul (played handsomely by director Roter) who decide to engage in swinging with Paul's sometimes fling Lisa.
Roter creates strong, realistic characters with real problems which are handled with maturity and class. Gena Lee gives another wonderful performance proving that she certainly was one of the finest thespians in the whole of the industry during the late 70s. Roter's complexly layered screenplay allows for the story to unfold naturally, and the surprise ending really is a genuine surprise.
Similar to his other films like The Psychiatrist and One Page Of Love, Roter takes a far more psychological approach to sex and relationships than most directors at the time cared to do. Despite the frequent sex scenes, they never interfere with the plot or development of the characters and in some cases even enhance the film's narrative.
Presented here under the title "Forbidden", Paul, Lisa, & Caroline is a worthy and sometimes affecting look at the complexity of a bizarre relationship.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of this disc's companion feature Hollywood She-Wolves. A rather boring piece of 70s sleaze, She-Wolves is nowhere near the league of PLC in terms of either style or dramatic tension. The simple story involves a woman's quest to find stardom in evil Hollywood. There's nothing new here.

Although both films are presented uncut here, the quality on both is less than perfect. For one, neither is mastered off a film print but rather VHS tapes. She Wolves looks a lot better than PLC, but not much. PLC looks terrible. The colors are off, the image blurry and bleeding, and the entire film is marred by tracking lines. That said, it is doubtful that either of these titles will come out in nice official releases so this is probably the best one can hope for. Included as extras are trailers for some other Roter films. The trailers, like the features, are mastered off of VHS.
