Initial Thoughts
I'm familiar with the films of Howard Ziehm and his partner Bill Osco and have never much cared for them. Even Ziehm's later work is aesthetically stilted, but I'll give these a shot. I'm kinda nervous about the quality though seeing as this DVD comes from Alpha Blue Archives...

The Films
Three Ziehm features have been included here:

1)The Incredible Body Snatchers
When this film premiered at The Mitchel Brother's O'Farrell Theatre in 1971, the ads proudly proclaimed "Here it is! The film you've all been waiting for." Well, not quite.
Body Snatchers has nothing to do with the two famed science fiction films of the same name, but is rather a pretty standard early 70s home invasion/rape fest. We open with a [painfully] long shot of someone picking a lock and then move on to a woman, the intended victim, talking on the phone. We then meet our titular "body snatchers" who sit in a red van plotting and bullshitting. The eventually break into the home of the woman mentioned above and "rape" her after she protests for all of five seconds. Then her daughter shows up and gets involved in the mix.
Our two villains are next at an outdoor cafe where two girls proposition them to help them move some furniture. This leads into another sex filled romp, after which our two robbers just drive off into the breeze.
The Incredible Body Snatchers is anything but incredible. It's boring, poorly made, has nothing interesting to show or say about anything and, generally speaking, is no different than 90% of the one-day-wonders made in LA at that time. The cast is pretty but so what? Attractive actors doesn't make up for a lack of script, characters, or anything else even remotely resembling a film. That said, I'll give this one credit for its early 70s charm and cool clothing and locales.
Overall **/5

2. Tijuana Blue
A man named Jamie visits a mysterious looking dude in an overcoat who gives him his "stuff" and offers Jamie big bucks if he takes it across the border. He gets his "stuff" and then heads home for a lusty boff with a girl whose name I just cannot remember. Said girl then tells Jamie she's pregnant causing Jamie to go out and think. Jamie decides to take Mr. Overcoat up on his offer, but Mr. O warns he not to hook up with any "filthy whores" while he's in T.J.
Jamie takes some stupid friend along on the trip who wants "to have a good fucking time." Jamie reminds him that they're here on business but soon succumbs to peer influences, which might not be such a great career move...
Tijuana Blue is the most complete film narratively that is presented in this set considering the other two. And while that might not sound like a compliment, it's really quitey good. Although still poorly shot and acted, Blue is a surprisingly competent early piece of hardcore filmmaking which is genuinely clever in spots, especially towards the ending.
In short, while it's nothing special, it's still rather entertaining and by far the best film presented here.
Overall ***/5

3. Seeds of Lust
Seeds of Lust is by far the most epic of the three films presented here. Clocking in at 85 minutes, it is over a half hour longer than the other two films, and generally about 30 minutes longer than most dirty movies of its day.
The film asks the question "what does a Midwestern family do over the course of a day in Los Angeles?" The answer: find people to have sex with. We are therefore treated to the gleefully exploits of mom, dad, and the kids and they screw their way through Tinseltown. Everyone seems to have loads of fun as this minor non-epic unravels on the screen and boils down to nothing.
The basic problem with this movie is its length. Considering the lack of substance, it's puzzling that this little film became the longest Ziehm made before crafting his epic spoof, Flesh Gordon. Seeds of Lust is just plain boring. One can get the jist of the entire film by watching it on fast forward. Again, most of the cast are "pretty" is that late 60s/early 70s southern California way, but the film just blows a lot of hot air and nothing else. Again, I'll give it points for great 70s style, laughable improvisation scenes, and Los Angeles locales...
Overall, **/5

The Extras
None.

A/V Quality
For once ABA has actually culled these transfers from 16mm instead of an old VHS tape they found in some bargin basement. However, instead of transferring the prints directly, they instead dumped these on DVD using the same half inch masters they used to dub these movies to VHS in the 1990s. So the pictures still look like crap.
The Incredible Body Snatchers looks the best and comes from a reasonable clean print. Despite some scratches, the image looks about as good as one would expect. However, there are frequent tracking lines from the VHS source tape and ABA has stuck an obnoxiously large "Alpha Blue Archives Presents" text piece superimposed over the first minute of the film. It looks terrible and cheap. The audio is also extremely low on this film but when the volume is turned up enough, it sounds fine.
It's a toss up whether Tijuana Blue or Seeds of Lust looks worse. Although both are taken off of prints, both are splicy and look terrible. The sound on both is extremely fuzzy and hard to make out at times. Although I would assume that is at least somewhat due to the original source material, the VHS to DVD conversion doesn't help much. Seeds is also plauged with an obnoxious ABA bug and while both are watchable, they suffer from occasional dropouts and noise.

Cuts Warning
None.

Final Thoughts
Howard Ziehm was one of the foremost early directors of hardcore films but his films offer little interest today besides a historical one. And considering the poor nature of this release, I would encourage only die-hard collectors to pick it up.
