Bustful of Dollars is the third offering from James Avalon for Red Light District but the third time is not the ultimate charm(even though I haven't watched Darkside yet). I would have to say I prefer the second movie, Sex Pix. The reason is not the sex which is outstanding nor the quality of girls which is improved over Sex Pix. It's the technical qualities and the pacing of the plot.
Manuel Ferrara wants to direct a spaghetti western (or should it be called a bistro western?) porno that he wrote himself. Xavier Towers plays the skeptical producer who inspires Manuel with threats of cutting off his nuts. At points of the movies, I wonder if Manuel was only playing Avalon himself as he frets over all the fuckups that come with the irony of trying to make a spaghetti western porno as realistic as possible. The middle of the movie is just Manuel pacing and yelling at his crew not knowing what to do. Since the plot is about the making of a porno movie we have extraneous elements that come into play like sleazy agents auditioning their clients and directors auditioning their actresses. We also have Manuel dealing with the headache of flaking girls but gets bailed out by the makeup artist and having to shoot another scene to fix a "disaster" of a movie.
As for the scenes themselves, the sex was outstanding with some very hot women. However, I have to question some of the lighting choices and the look of the overall movie. The camera has somewhat of a softer focus and grainer look than was in Sex Pix which doesn't exactly give the movie a retro feel. I also didn't like the reddish tint of some of the scenes. I can understand when it's used to reflect the feel of a western (reflecting the sun) but what was it doing there when Manuel is auditioning two girls in a fancy house? I would bitch about the gimmicky cloudiness of the last scene that ends up "saving" the movie if it wasn't intentionally schlocky made obvious by a playground carousel in the middle of the barn. It was my favourite scene even though I had no idea how that was to save the movie. The other scene I want to comment on is my jadedness when seeing the third scene. The second I saw Marcus, Strong, Brianna, and Taryn scene; I knew John Strong was going to get to do both girls while Marcus would only have Brianna based on the fact that Taryn doesn't do interracial.
Verdict. Just ignore the plot and watch it for the outstanding sex.
Extras includes a bonus scene where Marcos Leon and Ethan Cage come in after Manuel is finished (an extension of the second scene). Behind the Scenes highlight how perky Taryn and Brianna are. If you have any questions or comments, shoot me an email.
