First of all, let it be understood that I hold no
porn prejudices. If people want to have sex for
my entertainment, who am I not to watch them?
That means, among other things, that I have
absolutely nothing against "old school" porn. By
the same token, however, I don't think "classic"
movies are inherently better than what's made
today. With that in mind, Blue Ribbon Blue
presents itself as a greatest hits package of
classic stars. Unfortunately, it's not. In
fact, it was produced years ago before its
performers were even considered legends, and its
poor mastering reflect just how much of a thrown
together effort it actually is. Had they known
that it would be released in the 21st century,
it's producers may have paid closer attention to
what they included. Instead, we get a thrown
together collection of A-list stars performing in
Eric Edwards (who I like to think of as the Dick
Clark of porn) sits on an empty set and
introduces clips with all the earnestness of,
well, Dick Clark. First, is Sharon Mitchell who
delivers a brief dissertation on the
words "pussy" and "cock", then lends her body as
a visual aid. As is the case with all the talent
in Blue Ribbon Blue, I've seen Miss Mitchell in
better stuff. Watching her have sex here is more
of a curiosity than it is a turn-on.
Seka is next, having sex with Paul Thomas and a
southern blond in the back of a pick-up truck.
Seka may be the poster girl for classic porn
starlets. John Holmes himself reportedly said
she was the best woman he ever had sex with. Who
am I to argue? After all, he's the king. That
said, though, I have a feeling this isn't the
best performance she ever gave. She does a
little standing doggie, some missionary, and
that's about it.
Paul Thomas is featured in the next scene, as
well. This time with Serena, whose otherwise
erotic image will be forever tainted with the
knowlege that she was Jamie Gillis' girlfriend.
Mercifully, Mr. Gillis is not on hand in this
scene as she first goes down on P.T. and then
engages him in some stand-up sex.
Gillis isn't absent for too long, however, as he
shows up next with Abigail Clayton from her blow
job scene in A Coming of Angels. Granted, it's
from a certifiable porn classic, but the music
quite frankly is tragic. I'd rather have heard
the stereotypical 70's porn funk played in the
background throughout the other scenes. Watching
Jamie Gillis get off is bad enough, but should we
have to listen to tortured caterwalling while we
The next scene with Veronica Hart and Paul Thomas
is clearly gleaned from that short moment in
cinematic history when adult movies attempted to
compete with mainstream Hollywood entertainment.
It's easy to understand why that was such a brief
period. Maybe it's unfair to criticize it out of
context, but this is couple's porn before the
term was even invented. I wouldn't go so far as
to say it's erotic, or even sexy. It's more of a
fuzzy looking piece of nostalgia than it is
porn. Sex for the curious; not the horny.
Lee Carol, I believe, is insane. Each time I see
her perform she strikes me as someone who fucks
as if she's been instructed by her neighbor's
dog. Included here is her scene with Hershel
Savage from 8 to 4. While not necessarily the
greatest erotic presence in the world, she is
entertaining to watch.
I've always like Lisa Deleeuw, as do many men,
but it's hard to pinpoint the exact reason. Yes,
she's got red hair (and lots of it), which draws
some, and she's got great big tits which attracts
many more. Still, I think her appeal has more to
do more with her attitude than with her good
looks. She's the kind of woman who could send
you to the hospital with a smile. Her included
scene with Bridgette Monet isn't the best you'll
ever see. I'm not much for lesbian scenes, as
I've said before, but this one is even less
notable than most.
Finally, the last scene in this compilation is
worthy of the title "classic." Ironically, it's
the only scene in the production that doesn't
contain any actual sex. Should I explain? Well,
first of all you should know that it stars
Annette Haven who has often been described as the
most beautiful woman ever to have appeared in X-
rated entertainment. That's a completely
subjective claim, of course, and today's viewers
might make an argument for Racquel Darrian,
Janine, or any of the others who leave grown men
slack jawed and horny. Yet, no such discussion
of painfully beautiful women would be complete
without Haven's inclusion. In this scene she
stands between two men in front of an audience.
And, simply, she just jerks them off. I don't
know why it's erotic, but it is. I don't think
another actress would have made it as sexy. I
just hope more of her movies are transferred to
the digital format.
Ultimately, Blue Ribbon Blue is a curiosity.
Under no circumstances do I consider it a must
have. Content aside, it's just not put together
very well. In typical Cabellero fashion, it's
slapped together without real chapter stops, and
the transfer itself is lacking. You can find it
online for under $10.00 and anyone who pays more
than that will be wanting his money back. If
you're interested in finding a compilation disc
of classic stars, your money might be better
spent on VCA's Top 25 Adult Stars of All Time,
which has more sex, better sex, better extras,
and a great commentary track.
