Running Time: 77 min.

Initial Expectations: How could I not go into this DVD with high expectations?

Initial Reaction: I waited way too long to watch this DVD.

Who Should Watch It : Couples, fans of classic porn, and anybody wanting something different from the typical porn of today

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting an overabundance of a plot or nasty sex

Audio /Video Quality: Despite Barbara Broadcast being over twenty five years old, the technical aspects are great throughout the feature. It looks and sounds every bit as good as many television shows and movies I’ve seen from the same time period on TV. Although it was shot on film, there’s very little grain and very few remnants that come across. The lighting is excellent, and you never hear anything close to background noises.

Music: The music has a variety of styles. There’s some slow and sexy jazz, some classical music, some disco, some fuck music, and even the theme from The People’s Court. My only complaint about the music is that it’s a bit loud, but there’s something about the balance favoring the music that works very well here despite my not normally liking it like this.

Menus: The menus are the standard VCA menus that they’ve thankfully started to move away from. The main menu lets you make your selection while the movie plays in a small box, and the chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a scene number.

The Feature: Annette Haven plays Barbara Broadcast, a sex writer who’s about as well known as Dear Abby. C. J. Laing has the job of interviewing her, and is drawn into Barbara’s world. It doesn’t matter if they meet in a restaurant or a club, she finds herself moving into the openly sexual world that has made Barbara so well known.

The opening sequence takes place in an upscale restaurant. One guy gets his order taken and eats the waitress’ pussy. After a bit, Annette Haven gives a guy an autograph and a little head. The guy never comes, but they work it into the scene extremely well. The action continues through the scene, with the waiter giving a salad his personal dressing after a little undressing, a few blowjobs including a waitress making up for dropping a tray by sucking host Bobby Astyr’s cock, and a few people fucking throughout the restaurant. Suzanna McBain’s blowjob is easily the biggest sequence in the restaurant, and is also the best. You can really tell that Suzanne loves to suck cock, and it turns out as one of the best oral scenes I think I’ve ever seen.

Annette Haven gets a little action in a guy’s office in the next scene. She sucks his cock as he leans against his desk, and then fucks Annette from behind. She lays back on his desk so he can lick her pussy before fucking her. They finish things up with Annette taking his pop on her pussy, a little kissing, and even holding each other rather than seeing who can get their check first. It’s a differently done scene, as the camera alternates between a penetration close-up and a face close-up. I normally hate this, and I can’t say that I’m really in favor of it here, but it doesn’t work as badly as this style normally does.

C. J. Laing and cook Wade Nichols stare each other down in the next scene. She squats over one of Wade’s pots, and lets go with a strong stream. You never see the piss, but you clearly hear it. There’s some discussion about cut footage here, which Jim Holliday discusses briefly in one of the extras. They play with themselves a little, as well as each other, before exchanging oral favors. They fuck missionary style before C. J. turns around for Wade to fuck her ass from behind. Wade finishes things up on C. J.’s ass, and goes back for a little more poking after popping on her ass. It’s a great scene, and does a great job of showing that the best sex organ is the mind.

Annette Haven and C. J. Laing meet on the dance floor in the penultimate scene. They dance with each other, and take breaks to kiss and for Annette to eat C. J.’s clam. C. J. returns the favor, and as she does so, Jamie Gillis fucks and rims her from behind before popping on her great ass. Afterwards, C. J. sucks Jamie while Annette watches supportively and teasingly, and takes a nice pop in her mouth. C. J. and Annette’s chemistry really drives the scene here. C. J. has some terrific enthusiasm both for sucking cock and eating pussy. Annette mostly receives in the scene, but almost seems to control it at the same time. Annette’s watching C. J. sucking Jamie’s cock is absolutely amazing and had me completely enthralled. Her slight enigmatic smile reminded me of the one on the Mona Lisa repeatedly, and had me smiling throughout the entire sequence.

Finally, Jamie Gillis takes on Constance Money in a B&D flashback scene. Jamie watches her as she’s restrained to a wall. He lights his cigarette with a curling iron before coming over to work on her. He eats her, spanks her, and fucks her, although barely anything is shown due to the S&M nature of the scene. It’s a bit of an odd feeling scene, but also adds some nice variety to the overall movie.

I can see why many people regard Barabara Broadcast and Randy Metzger so highly. This movie does an amazing job of blending art and porn without ever making you feel like you’re watching an artsy movie. It uses your mind as the main sex object, and frequently teases you with images that never show all of what’s going on. You know what’s going on, and as you watch, you just get more and more turned on. Nothing sums this up better than the pissing in the scene between C. J. Laing and Wade Nichols. You know what’s happening, and by not showing it, the action becomes all the more erotic. Yes, there were times that this annoyed me. I really do like to see both the action and the reaction between the people performing the action at the same time, and I never got to see that here. That’s about the biggest complaint I can have about the sex. It all feels so unforced, and blends with the movie so perfectly that everything has a natural feeling. There isn’t much to the plot, but that too blends well with the sex, and has quite a bit of humor thrown in. It’s masterfully handled by Annette Haven and C. J. Laing, but the rest of the cast plays their parts great too, especially Bobby Astyr in the restaurant. Barbara Broadcast is a great adult classic that anybody curious about classic porn should check out.

Extras: There’s roughly two and a quarter minutes of production stills, with about seven seconds per snapshot, as well as the original cover art. For the age of the feature, these stills look excellent! Although the disc says that bios are included for Annette Haven, C. J. Laing, Constance Money, and Suzanne McBaine, you’re instead taken to a scene for each of the stars. There’s also a commentary from Jamie Gillis and Gloria Leonard, contact and internet information, the standard Hall of Fame Jim Holliday featurette, and about two minutes of comments from Jim Holliday pertaining to the movie.

The commentary is between Jamie Gillis and Gloria Leonard. Jamie and Gloria talk almost non-stop throughout the entire feature, and don’t limit their discussion to the movie. They talk about the stars and where they are now, including Jamie talking about how he spent two hours on the phone trying to get now recluse Annette Haven to try to join him for the commentary. They also talk some about the sets, Randy Metzger’s other movies, and make a few comparisons to the porn of today. It’s a really great commentary, and well worth taking the time to listen to.

Themes: Straight, classic, oral, public sex, interracial, anal, lesbian, group, spanking, rimming (male > female), and B&D

Condoms Usage: None

Raincoat Factor: High

Overall: Currently, Barbara Broadcast can be found online for between $16 and $28 with most stores offering it for around $20. Get out your wallet for this one, as it’s well worth the money. The movie is remarkable, and VCA has done a great job of restoring it. They’ve also added a great commentary track that’s every bit as enjoyable as listening to the feature.

Note to VCA: This is the way a classic release should be done!
